Arts & Culture Resources
 @Berkeley Public Library
This issue we are featuring more of our resources that are useful to those into arts & cultural pursuits. Coming up with time and funding can be difficult. Did you know that Berkeley Public Library is part of The Foundation Center's Funding Information Network?

The Funding Information Network is a network of libraries, community foundations, and other nonprofit resource centers that can be found across the U.S. and around the world.

Whether you are an artist, filmmaker or writer looking for funding for you next project, or are the executive director or a board member of an arts organization (or any nonprofit organization, for that matter), looking for information on grants and funding opportunities, start your search at the Berkeley Public Library.

Network partners provide a core collection of Foundation Center publications and a variety of supplementary materials and services in areas useful to grantseekers. Our core collection lives in the Reference Department at the Downtown Central Library where we have an extensive reference collection of books pertaining to grants and nonprofit management.

Through the Foundation Center, we are able to provide access to the following electronic resources:

  • Foundation Directory Online - This extensive database provides access to information on thousands of grantmakers and their giving interests. Available at the Central Library only.
  • Foundation Grants to Individuals Online - This database provides access to foundations and public charities that fund students, artists, researchers and other individual grantseekers. Available at the Central Library only.
  • Foundation Guide to Proposal Writing - Audiobook from the Foundation Center, includes detailed instructions on preparing grant proposals and insights into what makes for a winning proposal.

We also have many books and magazines on the arts and business that you can check out. Can't leave your home, office or studio? Use your current Berkeley Public Library card and visit our website and search Enki, Safari Books or Zinio for items on nonprofit management and fundraising for organizations, as well as on how to survive and thrive as an individual artist, musician or writer.

South Branch Library Wins Design Award
South Branch
Energy efficient lighting, ceiling fans and window that open all make South Branch Library airy and bright.
The Berkeley Public Library South Branch and Tool Lending Library, that opened to great acclaim on May 11, 2013, has achieved LEED Gold certification for new construction. Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class sustainable building strategies and practices.

Bioswales, drought resistant landscaping and high ceiling are just a few of the features that helped earn South Branch  as Gold LEED Certification in new construction.

San Francisco architectural firm, Field Paoli, who designed the new South Branch Library, received official notification on June 20, 2014.

The meeting room features large windows, energy efficient light fixtures and lighting controls.

The ceiling is made with sustainably harvested maple and reclaimed Monterey cypress woods.
