Berkeley Public Library Newsletter
July 2014
Greetings!

Summer is here and many of you are planning vacations. The Library has great resources to help plan your summer. We have free activities and resources to keep the family busy. Paws to Read, the Summer Reading game for kids has started, as well as Summer Reading for teens.

Remember, you don't have to come to the Library to use it. Our website is up 24/7 with content you can stream or download.

We have increased the number of ebooks and audiobooks you can download from Overdrive from five to seven ebooks at one time and new ebooks are appearing every day - just in time for everyone's summer reading pleasure. Check it out!

Travel tips from the Library
Plan before you go!
Take advantage of our collection of travel guides and make sure you don't miss something. We also have travel magazines both in print and downloadable formats. Don't have your own Internet access? Use Library computers and laptops to plan and reserve transportation and accommodations.

Take the Library With You
Going on a long trip? Take us with you. We have loads of options suitable to take on a road trip or an airplane trip.

Driving a "hoopdie" or older model car?  Go old-school and listen to audio via CDs or MP-3 discs. (No, we don't carry 8-track. We do have vinyl, over 4,000 LPs, but they are hard to listen to in a car.)

We are a 21st Century Library so use your computer or mobile device to:

  • Download audiobooks and ebooks from Overdrive
  • Read magazines with Zinio,
  • Read small press books with Enkie
  • Download music and video with Freegal
  • Download independent films with Indieflix
  • Stream Jazz or Classical Music with Naxos
While there are several apps to make downloading media easier, you do not need to download a special app to take us with you. Our website automatically sizes to a mobile format when it shows on a small screen. Check it out!droid_smartphone.jpg

There's no place like home...

Planning a Staycation?
Take advantage of your Berkeley Public Library card and use Discover & Go to get free or discounted admission to many Bay Area venues.

Summer is for Children's Reading!
Paws to Read Summer Reading Game

June 13 through August 16, 2014

All Library Locations

The 2014 Summer Reading Game, Paws to Read, has gotten off to a great start.  We have exciting events at all of our locations and there are prizes for all the children who take part and complete Paws to Read. Visit the library today!
Library Goes to the Dogs
As part of our Paws to Read Summer Reading Game, the Library is partnering with the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society. We are collecting new pet toys, treats and food for homeless dogs and cats that are waiting for adoption.

Pick up the list of needed items and bring donations of pet supplies to any Berkeley Public Library location.

Do It Yourself!

The weather is great. No time like now to finish those minor repairs.

Berkeley Public Library card holders who live or own property in Berkeley can borrow tools from our Tool Library. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will help you select the tools you need.

The Library also has books, magazines, videos and online information for your DIY needs.

The Tool Lending Library does NOT have automotive tools, but check out Chilton's Library Online! Tune up that car!

July Closures
All Library locations will be closed
Friday, July 4

 We will be open
Saturday July 5th.
Hot Off the Grill. . .
Summer brings thoughts of picnics, potluck and grilling.
How long does the meat stay on the fire? What do I feed a vegan? Sick of hot dogs? Need a new recipe?

The Library owns over 3,500 cookbooks on just about every cuisine imaginable. If that isn't enough, you can order books through Link+ or view the "Articles" tab on the Catalog to find magazine articles about food.

Here is a special cookbook that will give you Paws to Read:
