Welcome to our first issue of the Berkeley Public Library's Children's newsletter. We hope you enjoyed all the events during April's Branch Outcelebration. That celebration introduced the Library to many first-timers, and we welcome all of you to the Library.
This year we have opened up our Summer Reading Program, Paws to Read, to children 0-13 years old. Read to your baby or toddler, listen to audiobooks as a family while taking a road trip, or share some of your favorite childhood books with your kids. Older kids read ten books, for ten hours or 1000 pages and then visit the library three times! Receive great prizes when you complete the game. We will send out information about exciting events and programs monthly through our e-newsletter. We hope this information is helpful in using the Library. Of course, you can unsubscribe anytime. Just go to the bottom of the page and click on "SafeUnsubscribe". If you like the newsletter, you can forward copies to friends and families. Thanks for spreading the word! Our focus for the next few months at Berkeley Public Library is Paws to Read, our summer reading game. Studies show that children lose reading skills over the summer if they don't have access to books. Prevent the dreaded "Summer Slide".
(see below infographic).

It is important to keep your children reading all summer long so that they don't lose this valuable skill. And it can be fun!
Sign-ups for Paws to Read start June 13 and the game continues through August 16. You can play the game any one of these ways:
- Read ten books, or
- Read for ten hours, or
- Read 1000 pages.
Visit the Library at least three times and collect three library visit stamps on your reading log. Your child choose a prize when he/she completes the game. Finished the game? Keep reading!
The 2014 Summer Reading Game is sponsored by The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library and other community sponsors, including Fenton's Creamery, Bay Area Discovery Museum, Pegasus Books, Albany Bowl, the Ecology Center, and the San Francisco Bay Ferry.
