Principal's Message
Thanks to everyone for a great first quarter of school! We are very excited about all of the new programs we have been able to provide to our students such as acapella, clubs, and guest speakers such as Rachel's Challenge, and we are especially proud of all of the students' efforts in athletics, performances, club creation, and of course academics!
As we approach the holidays, we will be asking for help to give to those less fortunate through coat drives, canned food drives, and other philanthropic activities. I would like especially to thank Mrs. Reuben and the National Junior Honor Society in advance, as I know they will be working extra hard in these endeavors!
The calendar will get full very quickly through November and December, so please continue to listen to the Sunday night callers, and check the website as needed, and as always, please feel free to call the office with any other questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sherry Pinto, Principal

Hello Knights! I hope everyone is settled in to a great 2015-2016 school year!
Thank you so much for helping us to meet and exceed our PTSO Membership and Knight Deposit goal! If you have not already joined the RGMS PTSO or made your Knight Deposit donation, it's not too late. You can follow the links online on the Roland Grise Webpage or contact our Membership Committee. Every dollar stays right here at Roland-Grise and will directly benefit the students. These vital donations are used for so much that otherwise would be left unfunded. They help with things such as book sets for the library, school supplies, provisions for school socials, and funding for field trips and teacher grants.
The PTSO at Roland-Grise works closely with and supports the teachers and staff to make sure our students are receiving the best education possible. The only way the PTSO can be successful is with parent participation. There are many opportunities to volunteer, with varying degrees of time commitment, so there is something for everyone!
If you are interested in volunteering, please visit the RGMS website (https://sites.google.com/site/rolandgriseptso/) and/or pay close attention to the weekly "Email Blasts." Volunteer opportunities will be announced throughout the year. Volunteering at your child's school DOES make a difference!
The first school dance was a huge success and lots of fun for the students! We are still in great need of a Dance Committee and will need volunteers at our next dance which will be held sometime after the holidays. We also need a couple of volunteers to take over the Spring Book Fair. The book fair is a terrific fundraiser to benefit our wonderful Roland Grise Library. Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering or would like more information.
We also encourage you to link your Harris Teeter VIC card. This is a simple was to raise money to benefit our students, so please take a moment the next time you're at these stores to "link-up" to Roland-Grise and to clip and save those box-tops for next year's "Box-Tops for Education!"

Grade Level News
6th grade news
6th grade has finally settled in to Middle School! We have survived (and thoroughly enjoyed) our first field trip to Airlie Gardens. The students got their hands in the dirt to learn about soil and plant life.
Coming up in November, we have Forestry Camp on the 2nd, 4th and 6th. We also have our first A/B Honor Roll Field Trip to the mall. Thank you to all who helped with our Mixed Bag fundraiser! The money raised will go a long way in helping alleviate the cost of our Medieval Times Field Trip. If you did NOT get a chance to order your mixed bags, you can go online to their website and enter our school code, 146601. Our school will still get credit for the sale, but the product will be delivered to the address you specify.
7th grade news
The 7th grade is currently planning a trip to Carowinds Amusement Park for late April or early May! We would like for every child to participate and are running fundraisers to help defray the cost for everyone. In October, we sold Halloween grams with a positive message and hope to do the same during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. We are also looking into additional fundraising opportunities and your participation and support is greatly appreciated.
We are excited about the many educational opportunities provided by this trip; such as, investigations with centripetal and centrifugal forces, electromagnetism, potential and kinetic energy, velocity, and much more. As the students are entertained while riding the awesome roller coasters found at Carowinds, they will complete a workbook detailing the science that goes into these wonderful creations. An interest letter will be sent home with report cards.
If you would like to help with fundraising or assist in any way with this trip, please call or email our 7 th Grade Representative, Desiree Whalen at #910-620-7594 or [email protected].
8th grade news-
The weather is cooling down. The daylight is disappearing. The holidays are fast approaching, and the 8th graders are coming up to the half-way mark of their last year in middle school. With this, an emphasis should be placed on more self-regulation and self-advocacy; two items that will be relied upon heavily in the high school years. As far as content areas: language arts will continue to focus on improving writing skills and will introduce a collection of classical literature for students to explore. Social studies will focus on primary and secondary sources in regard to North Carolina's role in the New Union, the Trail of Tears, and the Civil War. Science will be covering Ecosystems in the next 9 weeks and ending with Biotechnology in January. In addition, the students can look forward to a visit from the Fort Fisher Aquarium to do an outreach called Ocean RX. 8th graders will also start preparing for the transition into high school by hearing from early college programs and by working on scheduling options. On a lighter side, the 8th graders will also be voting for the yearbook's superlatives in the next couple of months.

Thanks to everyone who has been sending in Box Tops! The following homerooms collectively sent in over 5000 Box Tops which equals over $500 for RGMS: Humphrey, Spooner, Yucius, Bennett, Moore, Harrison, Stone, Coach Titzel, Cockerham, Deese, Kornegay, Arroyo, McEwen, Kallet, Aisthorpe, and Woodard. We also had many turned in without a teacher's name, so thank you to those anonymous donors. The top two homerooms will be receiving funds to purchase classroom treats and supplies. Although the fall deadline has passed, please continue to send in Box Tops throughout the school year. We will collect as many as possible for the next contest, which will end in February. Let's surpass our fall collection! Please remember to clip, save, and send in non-expired Box Tops and Bonus Box Tops, labeling the collection with the homeroom teacher's name. Every time a Box Top is thrown out, it's like throwing a dime in the trash. Those dimes can really add up! Thank you for helping RGMS earn FREE MONEY through your support of Box Tops for Education!

Library/Media Center News
We have two school-wide literacy programs that are open to all 6th-8th grade students: the traditional Middle School Battle of the Books (BOB) program, and a new "children choice" program that is centered around the NC Children's Juvenile Book Award. The purpose of both programs is to expose our students to quality literature, to encourage reading by all our 6th-8th graders, and to offer a variety of fun, enjoyable activities such as rotating book clubs, special events, and participation in a statewide voting process to select the award-winning book.
The Library hours have changed this year to accommodate all the literacy programs during Homeroom and Mastery (8:25-9:10).
Regular Library Hours are 9:15 - 4:00 for borrowing/renewing books, using computers, doing research, studying, reading, and working individually or in groups. Please check the Google Calendar on the Media Center website for exceptions, such as reserved class usage, special events, and testing. Books may be returned anytime in the drop box slot in front of the library.
Please call, email, or visit me about any issues or questions you have. Your input is always welcome and encouraged, as are any volunteers who are able to help in the library. Thank you so much, Roland-Grise community, for all of your support!
