Aquatic Invasive Species Regional Steering Committee met April 5 in Nelson
Regional partners in the Aquatic Invasive Species Program Framework met in Nelson April 5th. Representatives from the four Invasive Species Societies and Councils, the Columbia Basin Watershed Network, the Columbia Basin Trust, BC Ministry of Environment, BC Ministry of FLNRO, First Nations, and our border jurisdictions met to discuss how program coordination and information sharing would occur. Invasive Species reporting and response responsibilities were discussed. CBWN Network members are important in this plan. CBWN member groups can assist the Invasive Species groups monitor, they can help spread awareness of invasives, they can assist in response when eradication is a possibility, and they can REPORT. Watershed network members are active in responding to local infestations. For example, the Salmo Streamkeepers have been assisting with attempts to eradicate the new infestation of American Bullfrog near Nelway, and many member groups are active in invasive species monitoring and reporting. Zebra/quagga mussels:Boat travel, especially after purchase, remains the highest threat 'pathway,' or 'vector' for mussel transmissions. Now that Lake Winnipeg is infected, and likely water in Saskatchewan, the 'safe zone' for boat travel is now considered to be BC, Alberta, Idaho, Washington and Montana. The BC Conservation Service has new boat inspection stations, and ALL watercraft must stop for inspection, including motorboats, kayaks, paddleboard, SUPs. To report invasive species there are several options: All species:
