On Thursday, January 9th Governor Brown announced a proposed balanced budget that pays off more than $11 billion in debt and builds a lasting rainy day fund while continuing to invest in public schools and expand health care coverage for millions.

 

"With a decade of intractable deficits behind us, California is poised to take advantage of the recovering economy and the tens of thousands of jobs now being created each month," said Governor Brown. "But given the vagaries of the business cycle, we must be ever vigilant in the commitment of public funds. Wisdom and prudence should be the order of the day." (Read more...) 

Office of Economic Development Provides Update on Local Business Incubators

The Office of Economic Development gave an update to City Council on January 7th focusing on local business incubators and the ongoing efforts of the City to support the facilities in order to encourage entrepreneurial development and facilitate the creation of new businesses. Business incubators play a role in Riverside's success in developing a vibrant and robust entrepreneurial economy. The report to City Council provides an update on the incubator projects the City has supported which have assisted 11 companies and created approximately 60 jobs to date. (Read more...)

Business Spotlight:
Chela's Bakery is a small family owned Panaderia located at 4022 Park Avenue. Owners, Chela and Javier Valencia came to Riverside from Michoacán, Mexico over 15 years ago and opened the bakery in 2010.
 

Javier Valencia comes from a family of bakers and learned the trade from an early age. All of the Valencia children helped at the bakery in Mexico before going to school and several generations now work at the bakery today. Chela worked at the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa for 11 years as a chef after which, the Valencia's decided to start their own business and purchased the property on Park Avenue and completely remodeled it for the bakery.

 

Chela and her staff of 13 family members who work different shifts with her bake everything from scratch (with no preservatives) beginning early in the morning and throughout the day. (Read more...)
