Study Shows Shopping Local Nets More Profit for the Community
Ben Schiller, a writer for Co.EXIST (Fast Company), recently reported that a new study finds that money spent at chain stores quickly leaves the community, while money spent at local businesses helps make the neighborhood better.
"Money spent at independent outlets is more likely to stay local than that spent at a chain. The study for Louisville found that independent stores recirculate 55.2% of revenues compared to 13.6% for big retailers, and that local restaurants recirculate 67%, while big chains do 30.4%." Video Details Commercial Real Estate Contributions to Economic Development
The National Association of Office & Industrial Properties (NAIOP), a national organization for developers, owners and related professionals in office, industrial, retail and mixed-use real estate, recently posted a new video that demonstrates the industry's important role in economic development.
Created and produced by the NAIOP Research Foundation, the video is intended to help increase the awareness of how commercial real estate development positively impacts the economy throughout economic highs and lows through job creation and income generation. (Read more...)

Several UCR Researchers Named Fellows in Their Respective Fields

Alexander Balandin is one of several UCR researchers to be honored

In the past week, several UC Riverside professors were announced as Fellows in their respective areas of study. From engineering to ecology, five researchers as well as several UCR alumni are among a handful in the country to receive such high honors.
These include:
- Alexander A. Balandin, a professor of electrical engineering in the Bourns College of Engineering and founding chair of materials science and engineering;
- Richard Seto and Jing Shi, both professors of physics and astronomy;
- Edith Bach Allen, a professor of plant ecology; and
- Pingyun Feng, a professor of chemistry
