January is Elvis's Birthday Month so in celebration, you will hear his awesome music everyday of FREE MUSIC WEEK!
Having grown up listening to Elvis and often drafting my brother into dancing swing to the sounds of: "Aint Nothing But a Hound Dog" and Jailhouse Rock, I became curious about his life and what my music students might learn that would be helpful to them in playing the music they loved.
Here it is:
1. Elvis was "bathed" in music from early childhood. His parents took him to the Assembly of God Church which was rich in gospel music-a very potent influence on him.
2. He got his first guitar at age 10. He played all the time, trying out different sounds and ideas.
3. Elvis entered a talent contest at his High School after studying the guitar for 6-8 years. This moved his career along when he won.
4. However, 1 year later, at the age of 19, after performing one song at the Grand Old Opry, Elvis was told by the manager, "You ain't goin' nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin' a truck."
Elvis's story is an inspiration to everyone. With good early childhood influences, consistent practice and play, performing when given the opportunity and persevering despite negative feedback, a student CAN learn to play the songs they love.
At the Champaign School of Music, we offer early childhood music classes for babies-5 year olds, private lessons in almost every instrument, A Practice Award plan to encourage daily practice, several recitals a year AND positive, encouraging feedback that helps every student reach his or her potential! Ask us about how you can get involved and start playing the songs you love!
