Sixty-Minute Mentoring is Looking for You!
We all know that mentoring is critical to our profession.  The best advice we often receive is from attorneys who take a few minutes to share their time and experience with us and answer our questions.

We hope that you are willing to spend 60 minutes - at a time, date, and location that you select - to spend time with 1 or 2 new attorneys or law students.  You will be able to share information that only a practicing attorney can offer.

For more information, please contact Karen Poole if you are interested in being a mentor or if you are an attorney or law student and interested in being mentored. If you can spare 60 minutes, you can be a mentor!

ICBA Criminal Law Section Meetings
9:15 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Rooms 1 and 2
Location: State Bar of Michigan 306 Townsend, Lansing MI

The Ingham County Bar Association's Criminal Law Section is hosting a presentation on Friday, June 5, at 9:15 a.m. on the Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions.  The session will cover immigration law basics and then get into inadmissible conduct, deportable offenses, the impact of criminal conduct on other types of immigration relief, and Padilla and post-conviction relief. There will also be some great handouts from our presenter.

We will be meeting at the State Bar of Michigan, 306 Townsend St., Lansing, MI 48933, Rooms 1 and 2 for approximately one hour and a half.  There will be ample opportunity for questions and answers.  Given Padilla, this session is a critical one for attorneys who practice criminal law.

Our presenter is Joanna Kloet is a Supervising Attorney at the Michigan State University Immigration Law Clinic.  She received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a J.D., summa cum laude, from Michigan State University College of Law, where she was an associate editor of the Law Review.

After graduation, Joanna was hired by the United States Department of Justice into the Attorney General's Honors Program, where she worked as an attorney at the Executive Office for Immigration Review, serving the immigration judges in Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah.  After working with the federal government, Joanna practiced with the law firm of Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge in Traverse City, Michigan, where she assisted individuals and businesses with preparing affirmative immigration applications and defenses against immigration-related prosecutions.  Joanna also litigated criminal defense and employment matters while with the firm.

Along with Elly Jordan, Joanna's work at the Immigration Law Clinic includes a special focus on the unaccompanied minor aspect of the Clinic's docket at all stages, from legal screenings to Know Your Rights presentations to representation before the Immigration Court and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Joanna is fluent in Spanish and is admitted to practice in Michigan and Colorado.  She is a native of the Upper Peninsula and is also a part time figure skating coach (fun!).

There is no cost to attend - it is FREE, so please share this invitation with others who may be interested.

So that we can make sure that we have enough seating and handouts, please RSVP to [email protected] or call 517.482.2000 if you have any questions.

Please note that beverages are not provided, so please feel to bring your own if you'd like one.

Please note that the State Bar has asked that we do not park in the lot, but participants who do will not be required to move their cars (we've finally addressed this issue).

We hope to see you there!
