Sixty-Minute Mentoring is Looking for You!
We all know that mentoring is critical to our profession.  The best advice we often receive is from attorneys who take a few minutes to share their time and experience with us and answer our questions.

We hope that you are willing to spend 60 minutes - at a time, date, and location that you select - to spend time with 1 or 2 new attorneys or law students.  You will be able to share information that only a practicing attorney can offer.

For more information, please contact Karen Poole if you are interested in being a mentor or if you are an attorney or law student and interested in being mentored. If you can spare 60 minutes, you can be a mentor!

February 6, 2015 at 9:15 a.m. on The Inner Workings of the 30th Circuit Court's Mental Health Court - Screening and Preparing Your Clients.

The 30th Circuit Mental Health Court is set to begin. This specialty court will provide supervision and the provision of services to clients with a history of mental health problems who have pled guilty to a non-violent felony offense. It is critical for attorneys who practice criminal defense work to know how a client becomes eligible and how the court will work to best advise clients on the practices of the court and whether the court is a good option to explore during plea negotiations.

There will be ample opportunity for questions and answers.  This session is a critical one to start out 2015.

Our presenters will be Kristina Zwick, Mental Health Coordinator, and Chris Wickman, one of the attorneys assisting in the Mental Health Court.

Michigan State University College of Law would like to invite you to judge first-year law students in the 2015 Spring Appellate Advocacy Competition.  During the spring semester  all first-year students argue before a mock appellate court as part of their required legal writing course.  We would be honored and delighted if you have time to help our students with this important event in their 1L year.

We are seeking judges for the following times:

      Monday, April 13: 5:15 p.m.-9:15 p.m.

      Tuesday, April 14: 5:15 p.m.-9:15 p.m.

      Wednesday, April 15: 5:15 p.m.-9:15 p.m.

      Thursday, April 16: 5:15 p.m.-9:15 p.m.

      Saturday, April 18: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and/or 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

The oral advocacy competition involves social media and student speech, specifically whether a student's speech is a "true threat" and disruptive to the educational environment of a public high school.  No experience in constitutional law or First Amendment law is necessary. Judges will receive additional information including potential questions and arguments approximately two weeks before the competition.

If you are willing to judge, please respond by Wednesday, March 18, in one of the following ways.

visit http://www.law.msu.edu/rwa/judge-rounds.php and fill in the judges' response form, or

      call Jennifer Markey at (517)432-6931.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me [email protected] If I am not available, you may also contact Jennifer Markey at (517)432-6931.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.
