Safety training
topics program expands
To better promote safety and reduce workplace accidents for English- and Spanish-speaking workers, Chesapeake Employers will expand its current bilingual safety information emails for policyholders. Beginning January 2014, industry-specific safety tips and trainings will now target three additional industries:
  • General construction
  • Landscaping/arborists
  • Refuse services
For the past year, the safety emails targeted employers in the carpentry, painting and roofing industries where catastrophic claims frequency originated. Steve Orr   Dear Agent Partner,

Happy Trails!

With this issue of Producer Line I offer a fond farewell to all of you who I have come to know during my tenure as head of Marketing and Business Development at IWIF/Chesapeake Employers. I had thought that I would continue in this position for two more years when this year began, but the loss of my dad and a strong calling for mission work changed these plans. Time will be spent in North Carolina with my mother and in international travel with Compassion International, a child-relief organization.

I leave behind a wonderful staff in Marketing who will continue to be the glue for agency relations. You can count on them to continue to provide the high level of service you expect and deserve.

Sharon Rowell is assuming my role as head of the Marketing and Business Development department. Sharon comes into the position as a veteran employee with a wealth of knowledge. She most recently led the company's Strategic Business Unit and is enthusiastic about her new endeavor. I'm sure you will find her to be personable and responsive.

Please know that Chesapeake Employers continues to look for new and creative ways to expand our relationships and enhance business. We value the role you provide in our distribution network, and we look for exciting partnership opportunities going forward.

I wish you much business success in the coming years. I hope our paths might one day cross again.

Steve Orr, CPCU

Senior Vice President, Marketing and Technology

Talking workers' comp with small business entrepreneurs
George Johnson, Territorial Account Executive for Chesapeake Employers, educates CEOs about workers' compensation insurance during an SBTDC training session.

To help entrepreneurs better understand workers' compensation insurance, Chesapeake Employers has teamed up with the Maryland Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC).

Recently, George Johnson, Territorial Account Executive for Chesapeake Employers, presented to a room full of Maryland-based CEOs at the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship in Howard County. The training session focused on workers' compensation insurance and how carriers price policies and what CEOs can do to save money on premiums.

Rounding out his talk, George said:  "I encourage you to utilize your independent insurance agent as business consultant. Agents have a wealth of business knowledge and can be very useful advisors."

The CEOs also learned about various commercial insurance coverages and surety bonds from Bruce Talbot, CPCU, of The Advantage Group.

Agency Advisory Council meets, discusses business issues

Chesapeake Employers' Agency Advisory Council meets regularly with members of the company's Marketing and Business Development team and senior management to discuss the best ways to retain and grow business. Recently, the Council met at the Cambridge Hyatt. Meeting highlights included:

  • The agent commission schedule will remain unchanged; however, the contingent plan could be adjusted.
  • The company is having an excellent year in 2013 and the 9-month loss ratio is the lowest in history of IWIF/Chesapeake Employers. This success is due to proper pricing, as there has been no overall rate increase in 2013.
  • Overall, 2014 rates will remain flat.
  • The upcoming Underwriting Management System (UMS) will have a single sign-on process for producers within an agency by first quarter 2014. This agent-underwriter collaboration tool is intuitive, and information is visible to the underwriter and agent at the same time. The biggest improvement is the ability to offer straight-through processing and instant rating that will help roughly 14,000 of the 22,000 current policies.
  • Regional seminars that provide hands-on training will be available.
