Tech Savvy Teachers
Talk Less about Technology and More about Teaching
| |
An interesting article to share with educators.
" Most of the tech savvy teachers give first preference to their learning objectives and then they think about tools that can assist them in accomplishing those learning objectives for their students.
Almost all tech savvy educators also believe that technology does not replace good pedagogy. Tech is best when used in application not isolation."

JREN Supporting Use of SecurityApp for Colleges
| | |
Addressing crime, one phone at a time - this is the innovative approach of a group of young entrepreneurs in Jamaica who have developed an app called CrimeBot. They shared their initiative earlier this year at EduVision 2014 using the national R&E network, JREN (Jamaica Research and Education Network).
CrimeBot uses a social community of watchers to map crime hot spots.
Campus Security Videoconference JREN is now embarking on a videoconference event with the CrimeBot team to share the advantages of the app to university and college campuses across the region in anticipation of the influx of new students in the coming academic year. The videoconference will be supported by C@ribNET's single platform that connects over 30 tertiary institutions in the region as well as those in Jamaica itself.

CKLN Implements IPv6
| | |
CKLN has concluded the configuration of iPv6 on C@ribNET and both ipv4 and ipv6 protocols will be running simultaneously.
IPv4 stands for Internet Protocol version 4 and is the underlying technology that makes it possible for users to connect devices to the web. Every device (mobile phone, tablet, laptop etc.) has an assigned, unique, numerical IP address and this enables the sending of data from one computer/device to another through the web.
On June 10, the Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean, LACNIC, the organization responsible for assigning Internet resources in the region, announced that IPv4 addresses are now exhausted for Latin American and Caribbean operators. They said, "The need to deploy IPv6 is now more pressing than ever. It cannot be delayed any longer if connectivity providers still wish to meet the demands of their customers and those of new users."
With CKLN's implementation of IPv6, there is now has a larger range of IP addresses available for users on C@ribNET. See more information on LACNIC |

TSTT Connects Trinidad Ministry to
TTRENT & C@ribNET
| | |
Prompted by the R&E VirtualDengue Symposium, the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) in Trinidad and Tobago was able to fast track the commissioning of their connectivity to the research and education network. The local carrier TSTT facilitated the connectivity between the Ministry to the local NREN, Trinidad and Tobago Research and Education Network, TTRENT, and hence to C@ribNET.
According to Mr. Rolph Young of TSTT and Mrs. Karen Rosemin, head of TTRENT and Director of Distance Learning at MTEST, discussions had already begun regarding the Ministry's connect
ivity. Facing limited venues with high definition videoconference facilities suitable for the symposium, the plans for the use of the Ministry's location were accelerated. TSTT was the supplier of the video conferencing codec for the Dengue Symposium and also the contractual agent for both provisioning and maintenance of C@ribNET entities in Trinidad and Tobago. Matching Needs and Resources for "Master Classes" for Caribbean Colleges
| | |
Many community, state or teachers colleges in the Caribbean have expressed the need for specialty lecturers or guest speakers. With over thirty (30) tertiary level institutions connected to the regional network, C@ribNET, CKLN is seeking ways to help address this issue. A short questionnaire aims to identify a) which colleges and disciplines are in need and b) which colleges have (or have access to) specialty lecturers or guest speakers. With the results, we will work with the interested institutions, not only in helping identify a suitable match, but using C@ribNET to enable the master classes.
A greater number of students will be exposed to the information and be able to interact with both the lecturer and other students at different colleges. The lecturers and institution providing the lecture will also benefit by the convenience, cost-effectiveness, and student enrichment.
Because institutions have their own curricula, academic, accreditation and administrative procedures, it is proposed that the Master Classes be conducted in the same way they would engage a face-to-face guest lecturer.
The intention is for C@ribNET to facilitate greater sharing between and among institutions. Please contact Colleen Wint at CKLN if you have suggestions, ideas etc.
