Greater Collaboration between Caribbean and Latin American Networks

Samoya was thrilled that the doctors and specialists had been able to diagnose her babies' illness in time for her to get treatment. The dedicated, high bandwidth network had made it possible to send the baby's X-rays and scan results quickly to the specialists hundreds of miles away from her remote community. Her baby would now have a chance at a normal life.

After hurricane Ivan, Tanya and her brother had to live with relatives on different islands, but they have both been able to attend classes at the state community college at home through e-learning and virtual classrooms. Like many studnets in non-campus countries, they can can now stay in their countries of residence and take courses and programmes from tertiary institutions in any country in CARICOM and overseas by way of virtual learning.

These are just two examples of applications that will become possible for Caribbean people using the C@ribNET, the region's research and education network, especially as it forges closer ties with its sister network, RedCLARA in Latin America.

Can or should academic networks address these conversations, which at first glance, seem remote from serious formality and scientific rigour?

The Latin American NREN Public Relations group (organisers), collaborating with CKLN and other networks, are convening the First Global Virtual Day where specialists from various scientific areas and countries will address topics of disasters and their management...

This past week, a colleague in Africa reached out to a colleague in the USA who reached out to us at CKLN in the Caribbean who reached out to colleagues in Latin America - and we were able to put two universities in contact with each other in order to help develop a new and important programme.
