Over 1500 pay homage to to the Memory of
Nancy Franco Maldonado
By PRCC
More than 1500 gathered during 2 days to pay homage to the memory of Nancy Franco Maldonado, wife of Ald. Roberto Maldonado. From the highest ranks of the city's most important officials, including Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Congressman LVG, and dozens of Alderman, County and State officials, as well as hundreds of community residents, who created a steady stream of more than 1000 mourners who solemnly passed her casket at Alvarez Funeral Home.

The next day, Thursday, June 7, more than 500 people attended a Catholic service at Maternity BVM Church honoring Nancy's memory. Impassioned eulogies, which captivated the overflowing church, were delivered by Ald, Maldonado and their son, Rene Maldonado. The eulogies truly captured the essence of Nancy and her many contributions to her family, friends and our community. Ald. Maldonado announced that Nancy will continue to inspire his work and her presence will be felt in this community for generations. As her name will be inscribed in the following community initiatives; 1) a foundation to fund research into early detection of Pancreatic Cancer, 2) in the batting cages at Humboldt Park and, 3) in the new proposed arts building on Paseo Boricua, which will provide living and work spaces for community artists.

Without a doubt, as her mother, Felicita noted, "It was Nancy's smile, love and kindness which galvanized these many people to come together."

Three Kings Winter Festival & Parade Returns After Two Year Absence.
By Eduardo Arocho, Division Street Business Development Association
After having cancelled The Parade for two consecutive years due to extreme weather, the annual parade picked up where it left off. The Annual Three Kings Parade took place on Wednesday, January 6th, beginning at Roberto Clemente High School and wound up at the Humboldt Park Field House. This tradition has been celebrated in Humboldt Park for over 20th years which includes the parade and giving of new toys to thousands of needy children. This colorful parade features The Three Kings on horse & carriage, trolleys and busses, classic fire truck, motorcycles, music and hundreds of children and parents. This year the Parade was dedicated to the Memory of the late Nancy Franco Maldonado, wife of Alderman Roberto Maldonado (26th Ward) who passed way December 29, 2015.

The Dia de Los Reyes or Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6th (Day of the Epiphany), which marks the traditional day in Puerto Rico/Latin America when children receive their Christmas Holiday gifts. Today, especially in Puerto Rico, it has become a major (secular) holiday tradition of music, gifts and song. In keeping with this tradition, the Puerto Rican/Latino community in Humboldt Park comes together to bring gifts and cheer to all the children who brave the weather for this, the first parade of the year in Chicago.
The event was sponsored by Alderman Roberto Maldonado of the 26th Ward, Illinois State Representative Cynthia Soto, The Puerto Rican Cultural Center, the Latin American Motorcycle Association (LAMA), the Chicago Park District (Humboldt Park), Chicago Land Toys For Tots, West Town Bikes, La Voz del Paseo Boricua, Roberto Clemente Community Academy, Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos Puerto Rican High School and the Division Street Business Development Association.
Seventy Bikes Donated for Giveaway by West Town Bikes on
El Día del Reyes
By Michael Kurshan-Emmer, PRCC
As part of the annual 'El Día del Reyes'/'Three Kings' holiday celebration, children of all ages received hundreds of donated gifts yesterday in the Humboldt Park Fieldhouse. As part of this grand gift give-away organized by the DSBDA, PRCC, Alderman Maldonado's office, and Representative Cynthia Soto's office among others, West Town bikes provided seventy bikes to distribute to kids of all ages, sizes, and genders. Yet another example of their service to the Humboldt Park/West Town community, as well as the concept of Community as a Campus, West Town bikes set up the seventy bikes in a room in the Fieldhouse and proceeded to give out bicycles of all sizes and styles. Dressed as Los Tres Magos Reyes, the workers from West Town Bikes helped fit each child to the bicycle which was best suited for them.

A few years ago, you may not have seen the youth from Clemente or other schools in the community riding around on bicycles, but now you see many of the neighborhood youth engaged in this healthy and fun community building form of transportation. Not only has West Town Bikes provided jobs and opportunities for youth in the area, but has impacted positive change in the culture of transportation for the youth of the Humboldt Park/West Town community.

Inside the Billion-Dollar Battle for Puerto Rico's Future
The impoverished island turned to hedge funds to stave off collapse. Now someone has to pay.
By JONATHAN MAHLER and NICHOLAS CONFESSORE
The money poured in by the millions, then by the hundreds of millions, and finally by the billions. Over weak coffee in a conference room in Midtown Manhattan last year, a half-dozen Puerto Rican officials exhaled: Their cash-starved island had persuaded some of the country's biggest hedge funds to lend them more than $3 billion to keep the government afloat.
There were plenty of reasons for the hedge funds to like the deal: They would be earning, in effect, a 20 percent return. And under the island's Constitution, Puerto Rico was required to pay back its debt before almost any other bills, whether for retirees' health care or teachers' salaries.
But within months, Puerto Rico was saying it had run out of money, and the relationship between the impoverished United States territory and its unlikely saviors fell apart, setting up an extraordinary political and financial fight over Puerto Rico's future.
On the surface, it is a battle over whether Puerto Rico should be granted bankruptcy protections, putting at risk tens of billions of dollars from investors around the country. But it is also testing the power of an ascendant class of ultrarich Americans to steer the fate of a territory that is home to more than three million fellow citizens.

Freshmen Embark on New Adventures
By Wendy Baxter, 9th grade English teacher
Roberto Clemente Community Academy
Freshman students are beginning a new unit that focuses on international mythology.  "It's very interesting, and there are exciting stories about gods, goddesses, and monsters," said Brian Martinez, a 9th grade student.  Homer's The Odyssey is the anchor text, but students' learning will also be supplemented with several creation stories from around the world, such as the Iroquois Creation Myth and the African Bushman Creation Myth.  Before reading The Odyssey, a summary of the Trojan War will be provided to build background knowledge and increase understanding of the epic poem.  Students will also define what qualities make a person heroic and learn about oral tradition, epic poetry, and literary elements found in stories about the hero's journey.
Over winter break, students will begin inquiring about mythological creatures, gods, goddesses, and monsters.  Aaliyah Lopez said, "All of the stories behind the gods and goddesses are so exciting."  They will research how various myths connect with today's world and find modern day examples that stemmed from stories that people told thousands of years ago, such as the Nike company which connects back to the Nike goddess of victory myth.  As an extension activity, students can choose to either write their own myth or create a visual representation of a mythological creature, god, goddess, or monster.  Students will craft images and names for characters in their stories and share them with each other when they return from winter break.  Pedro Samano said, "I want to learn about the history of gods and goddesses from other countries like Japan," so he will be investigating this inquiry-based topic over break.  As a culminating summative assessment, students will choose a topic from a menu of activities and demonstrate their skills and knowledge growth throughout the unit.

Four Kings Day: Celebrating Dia de Los Tres Reyes and Oscar Lopez Rivera!
By Janeida Rivera, NBHRN
Three Kings Day is also the 73rd birthday of Puerto Rican political prisoner, Oscar Lopez Rivera. This year the Chicago chapter of the National Boricua Human Rights Network (NBHRN) hosted a gathering to reflect on Oscar Lopez Rivera and the impact he has had in our community of Humboldt Park, his contributions to educating and standing up for Humboldt Park and Puerto Rico and how his activism, art and resiliency continue inspiring so many people's lives locally, nationally and internationally. After the Annual Three Kings Day parade and gift giveaway, community residents gathered for some delicious traditional chicken soup, cocktails, music and community building at NBHRN's event hosted by Oscar's niece, Lourdes Lugo. Outside of a great time celebrating the Three Kings Holiday, community members shared heartfelt testimonies about how they came to learn of Oscar Lopez, what about him inspired them to stand for his release from 34 years of unjust imprisonment and any memories or lessons they have taken from their experience with the campaign to free Oscar Lopez. Some people were students of Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School, a school Oscar helped found. Others who are community organizers who have worked in substance abuse and HIV/STI prevention like Oscar, classmates or Oscar and people who didn't know who he was all listened and shared in an intimate setting. Long time friend of Oscar, Laura Ruth Johnson, who has visited him, shared segments of correspondences that speak to Oscar's character and humanity. In a diverse room of people of varying ages, sexual orientations and different cultural backgrounds, there were some common themes that surfaced. Oscar Lopez advocated for educational, housing, employment, medical care and opportunities for his people and the larger community and has consistently sacrificed his own needs and comforts in the name of equality and justice. His example as a humanitarian has ignited the efforts of so many others to strive to be more like him and also use their talents and skills for the betterment of their communities. Moreover, Oscar has shown others not be afraid of using their voices to stand firmly for what they believe in, which is an honorable act that transcends even opposing political ideologies and is an essential characteristic for people who want to create positive change in the world. On Oscar's birthday, supporters of NBHRN were able to rejoice that the spirit of living and helping to live is a gift that they all have been inspired to give back to our communities and inspire others to join them in doing so as well.
