Summary of Discovery Camp Save the Date: June 21-27

SOD is a one-week residential camp providing 25 Nevada students, who are in grades 8-10, the chance to become excited about science. Students spend their time participating in inquiry-based, group activities in science. The program's goal is to increase the number of science courses students take throughout high school and help them learn about the career and educational opportunities in science at the college level.

Northern Nevada HOPES boosts HPSA score by 46%

Artist rendering of HOPES medical building to be completed late 2015

Raising their HPSA score from 13 to 19 for primary care, Northern Nevada HOPES boosted their recruitment and retention capacity from missing the NHSC cutoff point to being highly competitive.  A Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) score ranges from 1-25 for primary care, indicating the degree of shortage, and determining competitive value for loan repayment programs under the National Health Service Corps.

Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) with low facility HPSA scores can contact the PCO to request recalculation of their facility auto-HPSA score.  Staff in the PCO are available to provide onsite presentations about all of the NHSC programs and the importance of HPSA scores in leveraging federal funds to support recruitment and retention.

2015 Community Health Provider Day Hosted by the Nevada Primary Care Association

Written by: Patrick Chang, MPH, Health Policy & Research Coordinator

On February 11th, 2015, the Nevada Primary Care Association (NVPCA) held their biannual Community Health Provider Day event at the Nevada State Legislature with the aim of educating and sharing with Silver State legislators the value, strength, and importance of Community Health Centers (CHC) and safety-net providers to all Nevadans. CHCs are non-profit, community-directed providers that provide comprehensive primary, mental, and dental care services to underserved communities. Health center staff, providers, board members, and community advocates throughout the state were in attendance.

In 2014, NV's four CHCs served 77,805 patients, where 94% were low-income, 71% were racial or ethnic minorities, and 32% were uninsured - while saving the health care system over $98 million. For more information on CHCs or how to be involved in Community Health Provider Day, please contact NVPCA at 775-887-0417 or visit their website at www.nvpca.org.
