2014 Health Care Career Exploration and

Professional Loan Repayment and Scholarship Programs

 
Welcome to our annual Health Care Career Exploration and Professional Scholarship and Loan Repayment Newsletter!  All Nevadans pursuing careers in health care will want to learn about the range of activities, as well as scholarship and loan repayment programs available to them.

For our younger readers, check out the link on the 7th Annual Operation Health Care Bound event, coordinated by High Sierra AHEC and REMSA, supported by Washoe County School District and Career and Technical Education. 

For those already enrolled in health professional training programs, helping serve Nevadans in designated shortage areas can help pay for your training.  There are also resources available for health care faculty.

For those interested in supporting future health professionals, there is information about HOSA programs. 

We hope you will benefit from the information, and we invite you to forward this email to other students, peers and faculty.   Our goal is to increase access to health care by increasing the number of health care professionals serving in our state, particularly in health professional shortage areas. Eligibility for loan repayment and scholarship programs includes students and residents pursuing a range of primary health care careers, such as: doctors, dentists, nurses, physician assistants, psychologists, social workers and mental health counselors.  
    
Health care professionals who receive these awards can work in Critical Shortage Facilities or over 94 certified National Health Service Corps (NHSC) sites in Nevada.

National Health Service Corps (NHSC)   Student-2-Service (S2S)   

 

Students in their fourth year at an accredited U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school, who are committed to primary care, and have eligible student loans, can apply to the NHSC

Student-to-Service (S2S) Program.  If selected, the student can receive up to $120,000 in loan repayment  during their residency for committing to serve at an approved NHSC site full time for at least 3 years (or half time for at least 6 years) following the completion of a primary care residency.

NHSC Scholarship Program

 

The NHSC Scholarship Program (NHSC SP) awards scholarships to students pursuing primary health care professions training in the following eligible disciplines:

 

Medicine (MD or DO)

Dentistry (DDS or DMD)

Nurse practitioner

Certified nurse-midwife

Physician assistant

 

Students must make a 2-4 year commitment to provide health care to communities with the greatest need, based on the calculated degree of health professional shortage, upon graduation and the completion of training.

Students accepted or enrolled in a diploma, associate, baccalaureate or graduate nursing program (including Nursing Bridge Programs: RN to BSN; RN to ANP and non-nursing Bachelor's to ANP) are eligible to receive funding for tuition, fees and other educational costs in exchange for working at an eligible Critical Shortage Facility (CSF) upon graduation.

Minden Family Medical & Complete Care

 

The NHSC LRP offers primary care providers, in medical, dental, and behavioral health care, the opportunity to have their student loans repaid, while earning a competitive salary, in exchange for providing health care in urban, rural, or frontier communities with limited access to care.

Community Health Alliance (5 years) 

 
Enables dedicated registered nurses committed to caring for underserved people, to serve in hospitals and clinics in some of America's neediest communities, improving the lives of their patients and transforming their own lives.
  
The Nurse Corps LRP application cycle usually runs
from January to February.

This program enables health care faculty, from disadvantaged backgrounds, to receive up to $40,000 towards repayment of their student loans and provides funds to offset the tax burden in exchange for agreeing to serve on the faculty of an accredited health professions college or university for 2 years.

Participants should also receive matching funds from their employing educational institution.

 

The FLRP application cycle usually runs from May through June.

Lead Us into the Future

            An integral part of the very idea of HOSA is having current health professionals lending their wisdom to our many members.  The greatest challenge with this is not a lack of health professionals, but, rather, a lack of knowledge within the professional healthcare community concerning how to channel their know-how into our organization.  Fortunately there are many great opportunities available to health professionals that allow them to access our members and spread the healthcare knowledge that is so vital to the foundation of HOSA.

            HOSA is Future Health Professionals, an integral part of the health science curriculum in Nevada schools. Ideally, every student pursuing a future health career or in a health science program should be a member of HOSA.

            Channeling their knowledge into HOSA is something health professionals can do in a relatively small amount of time-of which many of them do not have an endless supply.  One way they can help our organization with a minimal amount of time invested is by donating to Nevada HOSA. This can happen at the local level where a health professional can help one chapter achieve its goals and aspirations for the year, and donations can also be made at the state level, or even at the national level.  But if money was a concern (and, even in a great economy, when is it not?) a health professional can save time and a dime by simply allowing a HOSA member to job shadow: simply letting the aspiring youngster to become one's umbra and follow dutifully as the health professional fulfills the duties of the occupation.  For the professional who does not have time ready to be invested, donating and allowing students to job shadow are perfect ways to still contribute to HOSA's vision.

            Yet, there are some healthcare professionals that are lucky enough to have more time to dedicate to our mission: the distinguished retirees, the resting sabbatical-takers, the crazy (read: awesome) go-getters.  Time is no longer an object and they can easily invest their own into HOSA.  For some, this can take the form of judging...events, of course.  Feedback from actual health professionals is extremely valuable to our members.  But for those who want to be more creative, there is the all-important workshop.  Presenting a workshop on the subject of your choice creates an opportunity to interact directly with the members of HOSA-Future Health Professionals and speak about topics, both exhilarating and daunting that will concern them in their future (we are still waiting on that organic chemistry workshop).  Whatever route a professional chooses, any contribution to HOSA's vision and future is priceless and shows that ours is a healthcare community dedicated to the future.  So what are you waiting for? Get out there and get those HOSA members into shape!
