Primary Care Office Newsletter
Spring 2014 March/Vol.IX
|
In the recent award cycle from the National Health Service Corps (NHSC), Nevada received 16 loan repayment awards. Our neighbor to the north, Idaho, received 112 awards. Clearly, we have some catching up to do. With the proposed federal budget increase of $3.9 billion over the next 6 years for NHSC programs, we have a great opportunity to grow our numbers.
Toward that end, we are expanding our outreach efforts, including:
- Collaboration with Area Health Education Centers, Nevada System of Higher Education and other health professional training institutions to incentivize students to pursue health careers in Nevada;
- Educate more health professional students about NHSC programs and facilitate the application process;
- Provide technical assistance to community health centers and state facilities to implement best practices for recruitment and retention, including NHSC site approval; and
- Partner with community health centers and state facilities to host regional meet and greet events and other opportunities for health care professionals to meet with potential employers.
Our 2014 Spring Newsletter is filled with information on current loan repayment and scholarship cycles for both the NHSC and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), as well as the next cycle for site applications for NHSC. Please share this information with anyone you think might be interested.
We recently kicked off a new initiative to map the behavioral health professional pipeline in order to make recommendations for the next Legislative Session. If you are interested in participating in this initiative or would like more information, please contact Laura Hale at ljhale@health.nv.gov.
Our Primary Care Office continues to facilitate quarterly conference calls on Recruitment and Retention, to share best practices and upcoming events. If you would like to participate on these calls or would like more information, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Barbara Heywood
