Leon Valley Community Pool
The Leon Valley Community Pool will be opening May 28th, Memorial Day weekend. This year, the pool is open to Leon Valley residents and their guest only, by way of an armband. Residents may pick up their pool armband at Leon Valley City Hall, from Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, and on Fridays, from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, at the front desk inside the main entrance at City Hall (6400 El Verde Road). Residents will need to fill out a short application and show either their driver's license or current utility bill, indicating a Leon Valley address. One armband per household member will be given out. Guests must accompany the resident to the pool where they will be given an armband for the day. Lifeguards will retrieve the guest armbands as guests leave the pool. Pool parties are still allowed, by contacting San Antonio Pool Management at 822-8100 and the Marlin's swim team will be signing up members at the pool. We hope you will come and enjoy the 2016 summer swim season!

Bexar County Hazard Mitigation

The City of Leon Valley is partnering with Bexar County to develop a Hazard Mitigation Action Plan (HMAP) that will address natural and man-made hazards that affect our area.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency defines mitigation as actions taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards and their effects.

The goal of the HMAP is to minimize or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from known hazards through effective mitigation.

Public and stakeholder participation is key to good mitigation planning!

Leon Valley residents and business owners are invited to complete this short survey (click on the image) to help your planners in the hazard identification and risk analysis phase.

Thank You for your input!

Mosquitoes! What can you do to minimize them at your home?

With spring rains comes standing water which of course, brings on the dreaded mosquito. Here is some important information to keep you, your family and neighbors safe.

Where do mosquitoes breed?

A mosquito`s lifecycle has four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. All mosquitoes need water to breed and spend their larval and pupal stages in water. This is why it is important to prevent water from accumulating around your home and to empty and clean water containers in and around your home weekly.

When mosquitoes are most active?
Some mosquitoes are active between dusk and dawn, when the air is calm. However, others will feed at any time of day. Mosquitoes prefer a warm, moist environment.

How can mosquitoes be controlled around the home?
Get rid of standing water in which mosquitoes can breed. If there are any places around your home where water collects, you may be raising mosquitoes!

What specific steps can people take to control mosquitoes outside a home?
Take the following steps to help cut down on the mosquito population:
  • Get rid of any cans, buckets, bottles, old tires, empty pots, plant saucers and other containers that hold water.
  • Keep gutters clear of debris and standing water. Remove standing water around structures and from flat roofs.
  • Change water in pet dishes at least once a day. Change water in wading pools and bird baths at least weekly.
  • Fill in low areas in the yard and holes in trees that collect water.
  • Maintain your backyard pool or hot tub and be sure someone takes care of it if you are out of town.
  • Stock ornamental ponds with fish that eat mosquitoes.
  • Cover trash containers so they will not collect water.
  • Water lawns and gardens carefully so water does not stand for several days.
  • Repair any leaking plumbing and outside faucets.
  • Screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks or cisterns.
  • Keep drains and ditches clear of weeds and trash so water will not collect.

How can people keep mosquitoes out of the house?
Be sure door, porch and window screens are in good condition. Don't leave doors to the outside standing open. Change water weekly in vases, plant saucers, and containers holding plant cuttings inside the home.

If you know of a swimming pool that is not being properly maintained, please contact Code Enforcement at 684-1391. Improperly maintained swimming pools are the perfect environment for breeding mosquitoes as well as a violation of the City of Leon Valley's Code of Ordinances. Thank you.
