LEON VALLEY FIRE DEPARTMENT WINS AWARD FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
Contact:

Residents and Media Encouraged to Attend

City of Leon Valley, Texas - Leon Valley Fire Department today announced that it will be the first fire department in Bexar County to be awarded a "Fit-Friendly" worksite status from the American Heart Association. The award will be presented at 7 PM on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at the Leon Valley City Council meeting, located at the Leon Valley Conference Center, 6427 Evers Rd 78238.

Leon Valley Firefighters have worked hard over this last year to implement new initiatives that would improve the department's overall fitness and wellness. These initiatives are also intended to reduce heart disease and strokes, which are the leading cause of death among firefighters across the nation.

These initiatives include: implementing daily fitness activities and annual physical fitness testing, annual nutritional consultations, promoting healthy eating habits in the firehouse and through social media, expanding our outreach for behavioral support through a local Fire Chaplain service, improvements in fitness equipment and resources, having walking meetings, team fitness challenges, such as the Tower Climb event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and much more. One initiative involves changing the method by which firefighters are alerted to an emergency notification. Instead of being jolted awake during the night by a sudden loud alert tone followed by information, the Dispatcher now states over the radio, "Standby for Dispatch", and then sounds the alarm tone, followed by instructions. This is proving to be a better way to communicate and prepare firefighters to respond. "Our hope is that this change in how we are dispatched lessens the impact to firefighters heart rates being jolted or shocked repeatedly over a lengthy career", said Fire Chief Valdez.

Texas leads the nation in Firefighter deaths, and the number one cause of such deaths continues to be heart attacks and strokes. Leon Valley Firefighters reached out to The American Heart Association and other local agencies in order to improve these statistics, and are being recognized for their efforts. The only other fire department in the six-state American Heart Association region recognized is the Dallas, Texas Fire Department.

Fire Chief Valdez stated, "We encourage everyone to learn more about how to take steps to reduce heart disease and strokes at home and at work, by visiting  www.heart.org "

Grass Clippings and Storm Water
With heavier than normal rainfall we have received over the past year, many residents have had to mow their lawns a lot more often.  Heavy rains can carry leaves and grass clippings into our storm drain system which lead to our local creeks, streams and lakes.  All of these yard waste materials contain phosphorus which is a primary cause of water quality problems in our lakes and ponds.  Grass clippings, leaves, and brush that is not properly disposed of, can also impede the flow of storm water causing flooding in some cases.

When mowing your yard, please make certain that you do not blow grass clippings into the street.  When mowing, make the first few passes with the lawnmower blowing the grass clippings into the lawn, and not the street.  Take care to use a broom or leaf blower to blow excess grass clippings off the street and sidewalk back into the lawn.  Do not use a hose to wash the grass or leaves into the street and down storm drains.

The U.S. EPA advises that leaving your grass clippings on the lawn doesn't cause thatch buildup.  Grass clippings are about 90 percent water, so they decompose very quickly.    Keeping your grass clippings on the lawn and not in the street or gutter adds fertilizer to your lawn, reduces your lawn's annual fertilizer needs, and reduces water pollution.
