City of Leon Valley cancels Fall Festival due to inclement weather:

Kelly Kuenstler, City Manager
Office: (210) 684-3219

The City of Leon Valley announces the cancellation of the Fall Festival activities scheduled for this Saturday, October 24th. This recommendation comes from a review and monitoring of National Weather Service projections for this region.

We are sad to arrive at this conclusion, however we can't control the weather and the safety of Emergency Responders, Event Staff, and the public are paramount.

The City of Leon Valley looks forward to supporting future events in the community.

Nora's Agency, LLC INSURANCE plus! ; To receive recognition at November 3rd City Council Meeting
The Fire Department would like to recognize Mrs. Nora Perez, Owner of Nora's Agency LLC. Insurance Plus, located at 6420 Bandera Rd. Suite B.

The Fire Department was just awarded the Community Service Award for meritorious service by an organization that promotes the public health, safety and welfare by initiating activities or actions which are considered to be above and beyond the normal expectations.

The Fire Department instituted a cooking safe apron program to serve as helpful reminders to people to stay in the kitchen while cooking. This program reduced cooking related emergencies by more than 50% over the last two years. Nora's Agency LLC. Insurance Plus provided the aprons in support of the program. Mrs. Perez is a long time business owner in Leon Valley and is fully committed to helping keep our residents safe.

The Community Service Award was awarded from the International Code Council to two agencies in 2015. The International Code Council is responsible for the creation of the Building Code, Fire Code, and all other structural construction codes.

"We are very grateful to Nora's Agency, LLC Insurance plus! and the Leon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce for supporting our efforts in reducing cooking related fires in Leon Valley. This program works to keep people safe, including our firefighters, we look forward to continuing this program for years to come. We were thrilled to receive the Lone Star Achievement Award from the Texas Fire Chiefs Association last year for having the most innovative and progressive fire prevention program in Texas. We did not expect to win another award from the International Code Council.....that's a big deal, and something our entire community should be very proud of."

Reason for the implementation of the program:
The purpose of this "cooking safe", fire prevention program is to bring awareness to and reduce the amount of cooking related fires in the City of Leon Valley. Kitchen related emergencies account for the number 1 cause of fires in our city. The department responds most often to a retirement community apartment complex for cooking related emergencies.
Leon Valley firefighters worked together to design and implement a new fire prevention program that would target their biggest risk: kitchen fires in part caused by unattended cooking.

Responses to cooking-related emergencies fell significantly at the completion of one year from the start of the "Cooking Safe" apron program. In fact, the responses fell by more than 50% from what it had been to in the previous 4 years.

About one-fourth of Leon Valley residents receive their water service from the San Antonio Water System (SAWS). Recently, some people received water bills from SAWS that were significantly higher than in previous months. SAWS has been investigating these reports and they have taken steps to respond to these concerns. If you are noticing significantly higher bills from SAWS, please visit their website at www.saws.org/highbill. Customers can also contact SAWS via a dedicated phone number at (210) 233-2050, or via email at Questions@saws.org. Please include the following in your email to them: account holder's name, service address, account number and a daytime phone number where you can be reached.
