CRUISE SHIP BERTHING

The Chamber Council is currently reviewing the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the construction of a cruise berthing facility in George Town harbour as prepared by W.F. Baird & Associates Coastal Engineers Ltd., Smith Warner International & TEM Network Ltd. and released by the Cayman Islands Government earlier this month.

The full report can be reviewed by clicking here. The deadline for public comment is 3rd July. The Council plans to develop a position on this matter and wants to ensure that all members are given an opportunity to provide feedback. This follows a previous survey that the Council released on this subject earlier this year.

Please take 2 minutes to respond to some questions that will help the Council to develop a statement that reflects the majority of views from the membership. This is a matter of national importance and the Council appreciates your participation in this survey.

BE INFORMED session scheduled for Friday, 17 July to review the proposed labour amendments

You're invited to attend a special BE INFORMED session on Friday, 17 July from 3:00 - 5:00 pm at the Chamber conference room in Governors Square. A special presentation will be delivered by Caymanian attorneys Huw Moses and Venesha McLean from HSM Chamber. They will review the proposed amendments and will respond to questions from members.

The Labour Relations Bill proposes to raise the retirement age to 65 years and increase maternity leave from 12 to 14 weeks; six of which would have to be taken immediately after a baby is born. For the first time, employers will have to give paternity leave to fathers of five paid days and five days unpaid.

Chamber CEO attends regional forum

Thirty-four representatives from nineteen Employers' Organizations from the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean, including Chamber CEO Wil Pineau, CCE, participated in a regional Forum entitled "Facilitating Participation of CARIFORUM Civil Society in Regional Development and Integration Processes",  held at the Accra Beach Resort in Christ Church, Barbados, from 22-24 June 2015.

As part of an EU-funded Project*, implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to strengthen the capacity of the Caribbean Employers' Confederation (CEC) to play a greater role in regional policy making, participants at the Forum  identified key issues of importance to Employers' Organizations at the national and enterprise levels, so that CEC can effectively lobby an advocacy strategy on their behalf.
