Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,

As I prepare to leave St. Cyprian's next month, a number of books have been speaking to me, Henri Nouwen's, In the Name of Jesus particularly touched me as he wrestles with the meaning of faithful leadership and describes moving from Harvard to living among people with special needs. The book is short, but full of profound insight, if you are looking for something to add to your summer reading list, check this one out. Here's a quote from Nouwen's conclusion:

"My movement from Harvard to L'Arche made me aware in a new way how much my own thinking about Christian leadership has been affected by the desire to be relevant, the desire for popularity, and the desire for power. Too often I looked at being relevant, popular, and powerful as ingredients of an effective ministry. The truth, however, is that these are not vocations but temptations. Jesus asks, "Do you love me?" Jesus sends us out to be shepherds, and Jesus promises a life in which we increasingly have to stretch out our hands and be led to places where we would rather not go. He asks us to move from a concern for relevance to a life of prayer, from worries about popularity to communal and mutual ministry, and from a leadership built on power to a leadership in which we critically discern where God is leading us and our people."

See you soon at Turk & Lyon!

Peace,

Will

Summer Scripture Safari

Building on the momentum we achieved when we gathered each Wednesday with our friends (from First United, from St. Cyprian's) during the recent Lenten Season, a new summer series will debut this Wednesday, June 5th.

Entitled Summer Scripture Safari, we'll take up and discuss the lessons for the coming Sunday,  exploring more deeply the riches of the Old Testament narratives, the details of the Epistle readings, and the good news as laid out in the gospel reading each week.

We'll begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. (and feel free to bring a brown bag dinner if you wish) and aim to close around 8:30 after a brief evening prayer that will include some appropriate music. We'd encourage you to bring your Bibles with you but will also provide a copy of the lessons each week, as well. While advanced preparation is not necessary, it might be useful and information as to where to locate helpful information will also be distributed.

Taking up the holy scriptures in the context of prayer and contemplation is the foundation of all communities of faith so we encourage everyone, regardless of their relative Biblical proficiency or literacy......to come out and join this Summer Safari....and see what exciting things you too, can discover!

Again, Wednesday evenings, 7:00 p.m.,starting this Wednesday, June the 5th,  here at the corner of Turk and Lyon.

For more information contact either Pastor Susan Strouse
(pastorsusan@fulc.com) or Rev. Mike Reddig (frmike1@me.com)

The lessons for Sunday June the 9th are:  1 Kings 17:8-16 [17-24];

Psalm 146; Galatians 1:11-24; & Luke 7:11-17.

A request from Pastor Susan Strouse
of First United Lutheran

In 2005, I wrote a doctoral thesis entitled "Passing Over and Coming Back: What Does It Mean to Be a Christian in an Interfaith World?" I'd always intended to turn it into a book - and now it's time.
But I need your help.

Most of us have had the experience of encountering a person of another religious tradition. We have friends, neighbors, and co-workers from other religions. Our kids go to school with kids of other traditions. Intermarriage is common. Some are even exploring belonging to more than one tradition at the same time. As we listen and learn about what others believe, it's natural to have questions about our own teachings, biblical interpretations and worship practices. While there's a lot written at the academic level, there aren't many resources for

congregations who want to address the religious diversity in which we live. My goal is to create a practical book that will help clergy and laypeople wrestle with the questions surrounding being respectful of other religions while remaining faithful to their own.

If you'd like to help, please send your answers to the questions below to pastorsusan@fulc.com by June 15. I promise I won't use your name (unless I get your permission later on), but please include the name of your church or denomination. Thanks in advance for your participation!

1. Has your experience or knowledge of other religious traditions raised any questions for you about your own?  If so, what are those questions?

2. In light of your interfaith awareness, are there Bible passages that are problematic for you?  If so, what are they? (you can paraphrase)

3. In light of your interfaith awareness, are there other Christian teachings that you wonder about?  If so, what are they?

4. In light of your interfaith awareness, are there parts of hymns or liturgies that raise questions in your mind?  If so, what are they?

5. Are there any other questions or comments on this subject that you'd like to include?
