Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
Three books have been influencing my thoughts recently, helping me consider the past, struggle with the present, and leave plenty of wide open spaces for the future. Garry Wills's provocative book on the priesthood, " Why Priests", Colin Woodward's " American Nations: A History of Nine Regional Cultures of North America" and " In the Beginning was the Spirit: Science, Religion, and Indigenous Spirituality" by Diarmuid O' Murchu. Each questions some basic assumptions about where humanity has been, who we are, what we are doing, and where we could be going. While there are aspects of each of these authors' approaches that unsettle me, I mostly feel inspired by the sense of possibility that comes from letting go of old assurances. What might the church look like without priests? Could our nation's complex founding help us understand and better navigate our diverse present/future? And how is the Great Spirit helping each of us along? My meandering reading list reminded me of a quote I recently read from the inspiring Malcolm Boyd in the Christian Science Monitor: "I have explored hills and valleys of aging, crossed rivers, rested in meadows, engaged in dialogues, listened intently, worked hard, and met remarkable women and men," he writes. "I sought wisdom and serenity above silver and gold. Why should the story of my odyssey concern you? Because it is your story, too."
See you soon at Turk & Lyon!
Peace,
Will

Saturday at Turk & Lyon...
SF Live Arts at Cyprian's presents BHI BHIMANwith special guests MEKLIT & QUINN
Saturday, May 18th 8:00pm $15 door / $12 advance
San Francisco artist, Bhi Bhiman, has had an exciting year. His debut record, BHIMAN, received rave reviews from The New York Times, Washington Post, Time Magazine and NPR. Bhiman has recently recorded an album of covers which includes his unique take on songs like ACDC's Highway to Hell. Bhi will celebrate the release of the album, aptly titled Substitute Preacher, at St. Cyprian's Church in San Francisco. He will be joined by his band plus many special guests.
"The best performance of the evening was Bhi Bhiman's solo acoustic take on 'When Doves Cry,' his vocals giving off a haunted air that left the crowd speechless." -Rolling Stone
"This is joyous sensory overload." -Time Magazine
Ethiopian-American singer-songwriter Meklit Hadero's music and life are inextricably linked to the rich cultural tapestry of her background. A catchy crossroads of Chicago blues and New Orleans soul and gospel, singer/guitarist Quinn DeVeaux has been packing dance floors in the Bay Area and beyond for years. Now, for the first time, these two artists join forces. This magnetic duo lend an all-new gloss to MGMT, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Lou Reed and Arcade Fire. "Meklit & Quinn"
