Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,

When I was in high school, I seriously explored what might loosely be called "New Age" literature. In fact, this was probably the way that California first took shape in the imagination of that Virginia kid. Most of the books I read touched a deep yearning with in me for a world of infinite possibilities. I also didn't see or experience, at least at that time, a great deal of conflict between my Christian faith and my curiosity about other traditions, beliefs, and practices.

The church is often thought to be highly judgmental and at odds with "new ideas." My desire, though, is to be part of a church that is comfortable enough with itself to be in deep conversation with other global traditions and new understandings. There is no reason for defensiveness, fear or anxiety.  In fact, the church as whole needs to open up on every level in order to have a future that meets 21st century human beings where we are.

All across the country, there are signs that the church as we have known it is dying.  Not long ago, The New York Times ran a story about how even evangelical mega-churches are losing members. Perhaps particular forms and styles are no longer able to serve humanity as they once did --- what then? Has humanity evolved beyond a particular form of church? How might we as a congregation be faithful in discerning what the Spirit may be asking us to become?

I had lunch recently with a mentor of mine, who reminded me of the title of a recent book we both read about the history of our faith called "Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years." The title suggests that what is behind us is just the beginning--that there's so much more to come and so much more change afoot for the faith. Perhaps this would be good for St. Cyprian's to consider as we prepare to celebrate 90 years in San Francisco on April 8th. How might we not only be called to celebrate and honor the past but also look ahead of us with a sense of possibility, with difficult lessons learned, and new adventures to come?

Maya Angelou once said "I'm not yet a Christian, but I'm becoming one." What might such an approach look like for us on the corner of Turk & Lyon?  What would it be like to say to ourselves "we are not yet a church, but we are becoming one?" What if the church we are becoming looks very different than the one that gathered for the first time nearly 90 years ago? What if the one we are becoming looks even more radically different in 25 years then the one we think we are now?

See you soon at Turk & Lyon!

Peace,

Will
