Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
Today, I visited with a grieving mother who lost her teenage daughter suddenly last weekend. The family is connected with a strong lay leader in our congregation, and I went at their request to pray and offer our community's support.
The tragedy happened in one of our city's most struggling--and resilient--neighborhoods, the Bayview District. As I walked past the handmade altar of candles, cards and photographs outside their home, I thought of all the images of grief, condolences and solidarity offered nationwide for the people of Newtown, CT. Newtown and Bayview are very different from each other, yet pain, grief, sorrow, and injustice unite us as human beings--just as their opposites do.
On Sunday, I preached about John the Baptist's cry for people to bear fruit worthy of repentance--meaning to show in their actions that a true change of heart has occurred. Our nation needs a change of heart about access to guns (it is far too easy) and mental health care (it is far too difficult). We need to back that change of heart up with action. Significant changes on these two critical matters would bring hope from the "safe" suburbs to "dangerous" urban ghettos. There are many groups working to bring about real change. The Episcopal Church has provided this resource to help make your voice heard: http://episcopal.grassroots.com/act-now/details/break-the-cycle-of-violence
St. Cyprian's as a community is no stranger to gun violence, nor to inexplicable cruelty and injustice. All of us have a responsibility to do our part to bear fruit worthy of repentance. We also have to find ways to speak up and share our stories, not just when the media shows up but every day and across class, race, culture, and every kind of diversity. One of the lessons of Sandy Hook is that there are no places immune from the harm of our collective misplaced priorities. Can you hear John the Baptist's cry? Are we willing to change? Each of us will likely change in different ways. Will our changes of heart bear themselves out in concrete action; will we bear fruit worthy of repentance?
See you soon at Turk & Lyon!
Peace,

Come help tell that old & inspiring story in new ways at the St. Cyprian's Neighborhood Pageant. Everyone who shows up gets to put on a costume, play an angel, wise person, or shepherd. We'll sing familiar carols with a few surprises thrown in. This year our pageant will begin with a special performance of San Francisco composer J.J. Hollingsworth's adaptation/arrangement of an ancient Ethiopian Christmas carol called 'Nuf Dhalatay', which was produced with the musical assistance of Awetu Simesso. Costumes provided, cookies, punch & eggnog to follow. All are welcome.

Everyone Matters, Every Pledge Matters
The Conovers have pledged. Have you? The Conover family first connected with St. Cyprian's at a block party, and checked out a Sunday service soon after. This fall, they have become regular attendees at the new 9:00 a.m. Spirit Village service for children and families. Doug, Katie and their children appreciate St. Cyprian's neighborhood engagement and our outreach to families with young children. New pledgers like Katie and Doug are essential to the future of St. Cyprian's. And thanks to the generosity, hard work and commitment of long time pledgers, St. Cyprian's has been able to keep our doors open for newcomers like them. At St. Cyprian's, every pledge matters, whether you are a neighborhood ally or a committed Sunday worshiper. Together with our neighbors, St. Cyprian's and Cyprian's ARC are growing into the lively, spiritually-rooted community and center our urban neighborhood needs. As one longtime Grove Street neighbor Suzanne Cowan said at a recent free community dinner:
"What's going on here is the best thing that has happened in this neighborhood for a long time."
Please fill out your 2013 pledge card, either online by clicking here or by bringing it with you to church this coming Sunday, December 23rd. If you have already pledged for 2013, thank you! If you haven't, please do so by this Sunday, December 23rd so we can plan next year's budget.
