Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
Today, on my walk to work I passed by this large quote on the side of a building near Duboce Park by Harvey Milk, "The American Dream starts with the neighborhoods." As I walked through District 5, through the Lower Haight, by the Divisadero Street coordinator into the north panhandle of the Western Addition I ran into to two friends of St. Cyprian's one who works with a group called Nopa + and the other called The Wigg Party, named for the famous bicycle path through our area, "the wiggle." Both have been highly engaged in the District 5 Supervisor's race. Though they support differing candidates they both are tired of the election season and expressed an eagerness to get on with the work of making life in our neighborhood better for everyone. St. Cyprian's as a church does not endorse candidates, even though half the folks running have stopped by our church at Turk & Lyon for special events over the past 6 months, some more than once. I am grateful to be serving a church and wider neighborhood that cares deeply about what happens at City Hall, in Sacramento and in Washington, DC. The work we do together though at St. Cyprian's and Cyprian's arc, "creating a community where everyone matters," is about more than one election, we are about the long haul, the greater journey of personal, local and global transformation.
A while back during the last hard fought mayoral race, another friend of St. Cyprian's who is studying for ministry was working hard on a candidate's campaign. Once I turned to him and said, "I hope you'll work just as hard on what the Spirit is calling us to at St. Cyprian's, as you do for that politician." Imagine the incredible witness progressive faith communities of all shapes and sizes could make if they had the enthusiastic, committed and engaged fundraising capacity and volunteer engagement of political campaigns? My sense is that's unlikely to happen any time soon, but it is worth considering and dreaming about...
Incidentally, St. Cyprian's is in the midst of our Fall Stewardship Campaign. As you consider your political contributions --- I hope you'll also consider your spiritual ones, and the work we share together at St. Cyprian's. To all those engaged so deeply in our District's election, I hope when all is said and done, you'll consider stepping through our doors and putting some of that drive for civic improvement and engagement to work. We'll be here.
Peace,

Helping to Make it All Happen Cyprian's arc is busier than ever thanks to the support from volunteers and neighbors, and neighbors who volunteer. Without help from the community, the center wouldn't be able to keep up with the events-filled calendar. Many thanks to those who have volunteered time to make Turk & Lyon what it is today - the intersection of arts, resilience and community. Pictured above is neighbor Doug Diboll greening the St. Cyprian's sidewalk. Doug has volunteered many hours on the hilltop because he sees that the space is meeting the needs of the community through programs like SF Live Arts concerts. Doug helps coordinate the free parking provided on these nights, which is a service that many concert attendees are thankful to have available. He is looking forward to the completion of the Community Kitchen Project which he believes is deepening Cyprian's commitment to the Northern Panhandle area. Doug also volunteers in the community with the Panhandle Park Stewards, a group of neighbors working to make the Panhandle a more enjoyable place for all. Next month, cyprian's will be a hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Party. It will be a time to celebrate the work of cyprian's arc and St. Cyprian's, and the volunteers who make it all happen. More info to come! --Allison Schaub, Events Coordinator |
