It's that time of year. The days get colder and shorter, the kids are back at school, the leaves on the trees are turning vibrant colors of red and orange and yellow, and apples are ready to be picked in the orchards.
It's also that time of year when the flu begins to make its presence known.
Here are some tips to help you stay healthy during flu season.
1. Get the flu vaccine!
One of the best ways to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated early. A flu vaccine protects you against 3-4 virus strains that research suggest will be the most common during the upcoming flu season. By being vaccinated, you are also helping to protect high-risk people from catching the flu, including children younger than 6 months of age who are too young to be vaccinated.
2. Wash your hands.
Wash your hands often and thoroughly and with soap and water. Avoid touching your face. And if you don't have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
3. Avoid contact.
If possible, avoid contact with people who are sick. And if you are sick, stay home from work or school so you don't infect others.
4. Keep up a healthy lifestyle.
Make sure you get plenty of rest, eat healthy and keep allergies controlled.
