Make the most of the time you spend with your child. Here are 5 tips to help you better understand and talk with your child.
1. Say What You Mean
Use direct statements when something is required of your child. For example, say "Please take my hand and walk to the car with me" instead of "It would be great if you took my hand, okay?"
2. Show Appreciation
When you show appreciation, you reinforce the behaviors and actions you want to see from your child. Make positive comments. Thank your child.

3. Get Involved
If your child misbehaves, change your strategy to find one that works. For example, redirect with your own play. Introduce a different toy, song, silly game, etc. Be an appealing alternative that changes the behavior.
4. Establish Routines
Create familiar repetitive routines. By doing so, your child will learn what is expected more quickly. Familiar activities and schedules help our brains relax. You will be able to enjoy each other more and reinforce rules less.
5. Follow Through - This is the most important tip!
Let your child know what is coming next and then do it. For example, "In 5 minutes, it will be your turn to have the truck." When you have to set a limit, mean it. Clear, calm consequences are very effective and better than threats.
