Running for a Cause

Peaceful, comfortable, safe, supportive, warm, special...these are all words people have used to describe their experience with VNA's Vermont Respite House, Vermont's only Medicare-certified home-away-from-home for people with a terminal illness. For more than two decades, the Respite House has offered a supportive environment where residents can live the remainder of their days surrounded by family and friends.

On Saturday, May 10, the VNA holds its annual 5K Fun Run and Jiggety Jog at Williston's Allen Brook School to benefit Vermont Respite House. This event not only helps us raise money so we can continue to provide this invaluable service, but it's a chance for families and friends to honor those who have died.

For as many participants as there are each year, there are just as many reasons for why they participate. So, we asked a few this year's fundraisers:

Why are you participating in the

Vermont Respite House Fun Run?

Heather Rylant is running in memory of her boyfriend.

"My boyfriend, Aaron, recently spent a month at the Respite House, and words can't express how grateful I am for the Respite House and the amazing group of nurses and LNAs who work there. I spent 20 to 24 hours a day with Aaron (for me that was the greatest gift) while he was there and I witnessed firsthand the priceless care and compassion that was provided to Aaron.

"I wanted to do something to give back to the Respite House and I saw an advertisement for the 5K Fun Run in the Colchester Sun. Aaron was a runner and he and I used to run together almost daily before his diagnosis in July 2012, so I thought (this) would be a perfect choice. I haven't run since before he got sick, so my performance won't likely be pretty, but the donations and outpouring of support I have received from friends and family for participating has been incredible."

Joannah Ralston will be taking a hula hoop out on the 3.1 mile course and hooping with a few others for the Respite House.

"As a Hospice volunteer, I have seen the commitment to loving care that is provided at the Respite House, and I want to do what I can to help support its efforts. The Fun Run and Jiggety Jog is great fun for a great cause."

Fashions, Food and Fun

Spring made an appearance on April 10, when more than 300 guests and volunteers descended on the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center for the Spring Blooms! Fashion Show and Luncheon, celebrating the Janet S. Munt Family Room. Thanks to the generosity of event sponsors, raffle prize donors and our guests who brought tickets to the luncheon and lots of raffle tickets, this year's event brought in more than $46,000 for the Family Room, VNA's Parent-Child Center which provides essential services and programs that support our community's most vulnerable families.
