Growth really happens!

I am going to get personal for a moment here.  My daughter just turned 21 this week.  She will be graduating from college this year, poised to begin a career as an Elementary Ed/Special Ed teacher.

(Moving to Colorado if anyone knows any openings )

While we always knew she had a sweet, kind nature, like many children, she was quiet and shy. And yet, as she will tell

you herself, there are thoughts, desires, and passions inside a growing soul that need time to take shape and strengthen.  What we as adults get to witness are often only sparks of the magic growing inside.  I couldn't be more proud of the adult she has become.  Mature, confident, and excited to face the next challenge.

Parents often worry about so many missed opportunities - academically and socially, as their children don't always connect today with what we see as so important for building for their tomorrow.                                                   [read more]

The Middle School Years -Transitions, Turmoil and Teenagers Who Struggle

The middle school years are often challenging for students with ADHD and can be especially difficult for those who possess weak Executive Function skills.  As students enter middle school, the structure and teacher-centered supports that existed during the elementary school years, and often served to keep children afloat, suddenly disappear. This transition can be quite overwhelming and fraught with a myriad of stressful challenges for both parent and child.

For students with ADHD, academic and social problems have a tendency to escalate as they enter middle school since they are especially vulnerable to the obstacles associated with weak Executive Functions, new academic and social demands, and the significant decrease in teacher support.    [read more]

Parenting Tip of the Month

You don't have to attend every fight you are invited to... Sometimes, recognize that they are venting their frustration or anger at others.  Help them redirect, or better yet, sometimes just let it go until they are calm enough to talk things through.

Teacher Tip of the Month

DonorsChoose.org makes it easy to help classrooms in need. Public school teachers can post classroom project requests which range from pencils for poetry to microscopes for mitochondria.  Spread the word about this great charity.
