MORE SNOW!
And Presidents week is just around the corner.  Are you feeling cooped up with your kids?  Running out of ideas to keep them occupied?
Here are just a few quick ideas to help you manage.
  1. Pull out a deck of cards.  See if you can build a fort with the cards.
  2. Teach your kids simple card games like go fish, rummy, concentration, or Spit.
  3. No Cook Play Dough.  Mix 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 tablespoon cooking oil, 1/2 - 1 cup cold water.  Have your kidsKnead well - adding more flour or water if too moist or dry.
  4. Build a fort with some sheets and chairs.
  5. Have your kids create a treasure hunt for you to find the items.
  6. A nice long bubble bath. - You might want one too!
Added bonus - playing with your kids is best way to Boost Executive Functioning as you discuss when, where, how and what to do.

If you can, try to consider that it is not just a chore to make sure they are occupied, but also an opportunity to spend some quality time together.  Sometimes getting involved with them is more valuable and effective than trying to have them be active themselves.  You can also remind them that they must be participants in their own happiness.  You can provide suggestions and ofter company to a point, but it is their choice to be open to happiness within the given constraints.
Hang in there... we are more than halfway through winter.

Is ADHD Coaching for you, or perhaps your child?     (originally appear in Dr. Hallowell's blog, 2/10/14)

Bike

We hear a lot about coaching these days.  While this term was reserved in the past for sports, we now have coaches for just about every profession and activity in life.  So what exactly is a Coach, and how does it differ a Therapist?

A Coach is a person who provides a nonjudgmental setting in which to explore goals and create strategies for achieving those goals.  When you allow it, Coaching is a safe way to expose yourself to receiving observations and feedback about yourself in action - what is working and what is not.  When you want to be successful at something - be it a sport, a profession, conquering a health challenge, improving your personal relationships, or parenting your children, often rethinking your approach is necessary.

Therapy can be tremendously valuable in helping address your feelings about a situation; often exploring it's roots and psychological effects on your life. Coaching differs from therapy in its focus on changing behaviors through strategies, structure, tools, and accountability for action. Coaching and therapy are often used in collaboration and support of one another.
