Dear Friends,
As you know Parent Engagement Network supports parents in promoting the social, emotional and mental well being of youth and families. And, our children face many significant issues in this community: depression, suicide, bullying, underage substance use, to name a few. PEN strives to engage, educate and empower parents so they are better prepared to navigate these issues and raise happy, healthy youth.
As part of my role with PEN, I participate in The Parent Support Work Group of The Healthy Futures Coalition - Partnering to Reduce Substance Abuse Boulder County (HFC). Youth substance use concerns me greatly, and one of the goals of the HFC is increasing the perception of parent disapproval of underage marijuana use. According to MarijuanaHealthImpacts.org "Over 80% of young people say their parents are the leading influence on their decision to use or not". The following link has valuable information for parents on having discussions with their children about underage marijuana use:
In my role as a HFC member, and as a parent myself, I am including information and a link to a brief, anonymous survey, designed to elicit important feedback from parents and caregivers on topics such as: perspectives and experiences with youth substance use, the strengths and gaps in current community resources, and the types of resources and support parents and caregivers would like to have available to them. The survey will only take about 10-15 minutes, and your contribution will provide valuable information to those working to address the changing context of marijuana use in our community. The information about the survey, and the link to the survey are below.
Thank you so much for considering providing your input (by March 18th)
Best,
Shelly Executive Director for Parent Engagement Network (PEN)
Survey Information:
Peer Assistance Services has received a grant from the Office of Behavioral Health to provide programming and resources around the prevention of youth substance use for parents and caregivers across the state.
We know that parents and caregivers have a critical voice and role to play in supporting youth substance use prevention. OMNI is working with Peer Assistance Services to gather direct input from parents and caregivers through a statewide survey. This is a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to have their voices heard so that future resources and programming are directed where they are needed most. A summary of the findings will be made publicly available in mid-2016.
