Greetings!

And so another year of classroom thrills, cafeteria spills and wintertime chills draws to a close. Thank you to all our teachers, staff members and students for making these past months ones to remember forever, and congratulations for the academic, athletic and artistic successes that help one of the state's best districts shine. Enjoy your summer plans and see you back for the first day of next year on Sept. 1.

Biology teacher Jack Lyke with Alyssa Huff

The State College Area School District encourages all students to aim high, but Alyssa Huff is taking the notion literally.

Huff, a rising State High junior, recently was named a Top 5 finalist in the first Genes in Space competition, an effort sponsored in part by Boeing and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space to place a student-designed experiment involving DNA analysis on the International Space Station 250 miles above Earth.

Bus Wi-fi Access Allows SCAHS Athletes to Keep Up With Classes On Trips

State College Area High School athletes on road trips no longer have to return home to do homework.

Team buses this spring added full wi-fi access, allowing students to use the State College Area School District wi-fi network, conduct research and finish assignments while in transit, sometimes for several hours.

It's all thanks to little black boxes weighing less than
5 pounds each - the district technology staff's creative solution to a pressing problem.

Thanks to so many State High teachers, staff members, administrators and students, the #DocumentTheState photo contest was a resounding success, with a special thank you to Sarah Rito and Becca Thorsen's journalism class for all the help.

Over the contest's two weeks, there were more than 250 photo entries capturing State High inside and out. A panel of judges selected the following category winners from among many inspiring photos:

  • Beauty of Art:  Brittany Ott

  • Nostalgia (tie): Ilya Bogdanets and Celia Craig

  • Classrooms: Denise Schwab

  • Familiar Smells: Emy Booz

  • Home Away from Home: Jill Campbell

  • Close-up: Zach Shafer

You can view the prize-winning entries and list of prizes here: www.scasd.org/DocumentTheState

You can view the contest entries at:

If you'd like to continue contributing to #DocumentTheState, you can tag photos of the North and South buildings and grounds with #DocumentTheState or email them to DocumentTheState@scasd.org. These can be photos from past or present and can be from anyone in the community. Many of these photos will be highlighted on the district's Instagram account @statecollegeschooldistrict.

Thank you again to all the participants who helped create a photographic tribute to a school that will soon be forever changed.

Delta Program's Stompers sculpture stands
for mental health

A colorful figure these days greets students and visitors in the hallway outside the Delta Program's main office. He never leaves, always on permanent welcome duty.

His name is "Fred," which means "peace" in Scandinavian languages, and he's made from recycled sneakers turned into art. Delta students created Fred and unveiled him in a dedication ceremony April 29 as part of the Jana Marie Foundation's Stompers Project.
