Scenes from the 2015 Exploration-U Science Fair

Bethany Regan peered intently at the test tube, a fitting introduction to a sprawling science fair.

The 7-year-old, who goes to Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, had just arrived at Exploration-U, the annual event organized by the State College Area School District Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) faculty and the Penn State Eberly College of Science Outreach and Science Engagement Office.

State High Project
  • The State High Project 60 percent design review has been extended. The new date for the Board of Directors to approve the design package is May 11. The 90 percent review phase will now end July 13, and the bid phase will be July 29-Aug.5. Bids are expected to be awarded Sept. 16.

  • Responding to the District athletic community's requests, the Board on April 27 voted to move a fitness center and auxiliary gym for wrestling into the project's base bid budget.

  • Also on April 27, the Board approved the project's first construction bid for summer site work at the South Building in preparation for the start of the 2015-16 school year. R.C. Bowman's winning bid was $1,609,700.

  • The Board is considering several performing arts design changes to the 60 percent floor plans that stemmed from public feedback. The current design represents a 6,900 square foot increase from the original educational plan, and includes proposed auditorium features and additional storage space.

  • A groundbreaking ceremony for the State High Project has been scheduled for 4 p.m. May 14 at the State College Area High School South Building.

David Rockower and Kileigh Kane accept their awards at a ceremony at Barnes & Noble

Kileigh Kane, an 8th-grader at Delta Middle, wrote a moving essay about English teacher David Rockower that won a regional award. Here's an excerpt:

I have never been so grateful to a teacher in my entire life. Thank you for teaching something that you love, and for sharing your passion with your students.

Famous Women in History

The District's central office always has fantastic art on display, and this one is no exception. The 3-dimensional, lighted art made by 8th graders in Molly Gazda's class at Park Forest Middle School commemorates famous women of the past 100 years.
