Teacher Feature
A new newsletter feature, introducing one of the district's many wonderful teachers each month.

L to R: Sharon Perry, CTC Director, and Shelly Ishler, Cooperative Education Coordinator
Shelly Ishler - Cooperative Education Coordinator, State High

Shelly was recently named Pennsylvania Outstanding Cooperative Education Coordinator by the PA Cooperative Education Association. In her role she works with career and  technical students to identify specific job placement opportunities related to their technical area. She also teaches a workplace-readiness course, contracts with students for goals and objectives for student success on the job, and visits their work site each month. Students receive a grade for the class and work portion.

Shelly is a State High grad with a bachelors degree in exercise and sport science and a masters in workforce education and development from PSU. She is certified in physical education and health and cooperative education. Having taught physical ed in the Bald Eagle and Clearfield school districts, she's been with SCASD since 1996, first as a phys ed and varsity field hockey coach. She has been the cooperative education coordinator since 2001.

Shelly says, "I love my job because I can see our students be successful at school and then see them carry that success from the technical classroom to real-life on-the-job experiences. Our career and technical education teachers do a great job of giving our students a solid foundation so they can be placed in our community as effective and informed employees."

When not working, Shelly spends time with her husband, Brian, MNMS principal, son Bailey (10th grade) and daughter Kasey (6th grade).

Nov. 19, 2013   Straight Talk for Parents Series
Topic: Talking to your teen about healthy relationships
Location: Mount Nittany Middle School Auditorium, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Presenter - Amelia McGinnis, MSW, LCSW, Outpatient and Neurofeedback Therapist, Individual and Family Choices Program

In the age of "tweens" and technology, it is becoming more important than ever for parents to be able to talk to their children about healthy relationships. How do we, as parents, convey our values and beliefs about relationships in a way that our children can hear us? Do we even know what our values are? During this Straight Talk we will explore our own values and beliefs regarding healthy relationships and then discuss how to share those values with our children in a way they can hear. Come learn how to open this important dialogue between you and your child.

Free children's activities and homework help available. Contact Connie Schulz at ces11@scasd.org to register children.

These seminars are made possible by the Straight Talk Task Force including members from: The Jana Marie Foundation, Youth Services Bureau, Communities That Care Partnership, and State College Area School District administration, faculty, and staff.
