What's happening in our schools:

At the elementary level,
Both Houseville and Lemont Elementary had a wonderful storyteller from Ireland share some very interactive and engaging stories. Not only was she entertaining, but the kids certainly had a lesson in expression and fluency! Our 2nd and 3rd grade wrapped up a second round of lunchtime book clubs with the books "The Great Alaskan Adventure" and "Stuart's Cape."

Mount Nittany Elementary and Easterly Parkway Elementary students and staff held an official send-off for all of our Special Olympic athletes. The celebration was a great way to encourage the students as they prepared to participate in the various competitions. The students were certainly excited and appreciative of the strong show of support from their classmates and fans!

At the middle level
The Physical Education department and Centre Region Parks and Rec are sponsoring a 15-Day Bicycle Scavenger Hunt April 26 to May 11.
Participants bike to and photograph themselves or their team at as many of our 50 parks as they can. Then attend the Bicycle Extravaganza at Mount Nittany Middle School, May 11, 12:30 to 4 p.m. for Community Bike rides, music, free food, raffle tickets and prizes. Scavenger Hunt winners will be announced. See Details.

Mount Nittany Middle School eighth grader Adalia Chen is one of 23 National Merit Award winners of the Lion's International Peace Poster Contest. The following students were district winners: Andrew Pautz, Angel Zheng, Jonathan Rowell, Ari Glyckman and Breanna Folmer.

Sophie Paterno won the state-level competition (Level 2) for Letters about Literature. Her letter now moves on to the national competition.

At Park Forest Middle School PSSA testing went well last week. To reward students with educational, yet fun activities, we held three afternoons of fairs and related activities for students:
  • Multicultural Fair on Wednesday as well as an assembly of cultural entertainers;
  • A Health Fair on Thursday with over 60 community organizations representing fitness and health related opportunities for students and staff in addition to a motivational assembly with PSU athletes and local radio DJ's; Our Health Fair was featured on Channels 6 & 10 and the CDT.
  • A STEM Fair Friday with over 60 community members from various engineering firms and STEM related businesses as well as an assembly presented by Restek.
At the High School
Prom Season is here. In an effort to reduce drinking and driving at all times especially during prom and graduation season, the PA DUI Task Force in conjunction with State College borough police are bringing the driving under the influence (DUI) simulator to State High on April 24. The simulator will allow students to experience what it's like to drive under the influence, experience field sobriety tests, and learn the procedure behind being arrested. The goal is to deter students from underage drinking and driving while under the influence.

A sold-out crowd will get to take home their soup bowl after enjoying soups, salads, breads and desserts at the Empty Bowls event, April 24. Art students created the pottery bowls and Culinary Arts students made  gourmet foods. All proceeds support the State College Food Bank.
