Greetings!
Lots of teaching and learning takes place everyday in our schools. Featured below is just a taste of some of the recent special happenings. We encourage you to engage in the process to help develop and then approve a plan for improving our high school facilities. Read more below.

What's happening in our schools:
At the elementary level, lots of reading activities took place last week with Read Across America. At Radio Park students and staff dressed as favorite characters in honor of Dr. Seuss books. Teachers used Dr. Seuss's work to highlight strategies and skills during reading and writing.
At Houserville/Lemont students have been challenged to read daily for at least 15 minutes per day to earn the B.A.B. trophy (Books and Basketball) each week. Lady Lions basketball team and the State High basketball team visited. The boys team shared their favorite books with the kids. At Corl Street two senior members of the Lady Lions Basketball team read their favorite Dr. Seuss books during a whole-school assembly. The school also celebrated their annual African-American Read-in with 14 readers including special guest, Coach Coquese Washington. (photo by Kristi Jones)
Radio Park Elementary celebrated its annual SLAM Fair highlighting students' talents in Science, Literature, Art and MusicAt the middle level, Mount Nittany Middle School had a visit from PSU's EcoCar2 in the 7th grade Green Team Science Classes. Both 8th grade Sciences classes had a presentation from Penn State's Lion Tech Rocket Lab. They demonstrated how they build and launch high-power rockets for NASA's University Student Launch Initiative Competition. PSU Student Athletes continue to talk with our 6th grade students during Advisory about bullying.At the High School t he Ocean Bowl Team won the Chesapeake Bay Bowl and will take an all-expenses-paid trip to the national competition in Milwaukee. The team consists of: Nathan Arnett, Eli Jaenicke, Carol Hundal, Anna Whitaker and Alicia Lai Advisor Nell Herrmann.Three State High students, Sicong Shen, Michael X. Betts, and Joseph X. Lin have been recognized and selected as Semifinalists for the U.S Physics Olympics Team. State High's National Science Bowl team competed in the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab and placed third out of 18 teams. Sponsored by the Department of Energy it involves students answering questions in a fast-paced quiz bowl format. Team members are: Joseph Lin (Captain), Sachira Denagamage, Sajal Datta, Sicong Shen and Jacob Van Hook, coach, Nell Herrmann.

 Straight Talk for Parents Series Adolescent Depression: What's normal and what's not Date/Time: March 19, 2013, 7 - 9 p.m. Location: Mount Nittany Middle School Auditorium, Free childcare provided, contact David Richardson dmr28@scasd.org Speaker: Brian Rabian, Ph.D, Director of the Psychological Clinic, Penn State University. Panel discussion will include professionals and youth who will share various perspectives on this subject. Emotional development in adolescence is often uneven. Join us to learn more about what is typical and when to seek help.
Exploration-U: Community Science Event Date/Time: March 19, 6 - 8 p.m. Location: High School South cafeteria and gymnasium
Join in this fun, free night of educational and informative science activities. The Penn State Eberly College of Science Outreach and Science Engagement Office is partnering with the SCASD STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) staff to celebrate science in the State College Community. Groups from PSU, SCASD and the community will feature fun, free, hands-on science activities for kids of all ages. From rocketry to polar, chemistry to microbiology more than 30 science departments and groups will be on hand to get kids engaged in science. Admission and parking are free. Learn more.
