Appreciation for Rev. Maria King
The Congregational Vitality Team expressed their thanks last week to Rev. Maria King for serving so ably as our district's Congregational Vitality Strategist since July while also serving as the pastor of Vickrey UMC. Maria traveled extensively throughout our district, put together valuable information on all of our churches, and worked closely with the Congregational Vitality Team, and with me, to design strategies to help our churches become more vital. To implement some of those strategies she was invited by some of our largest churches to do staff development; she gave seminars on designing discipleship systems in local churches; she coordinated preachers having a preaching coach; she was our liaison with Plowpoint ministries and their Checking Vital Signs and Intentional Vitality for Change processes; and she helped coordinate the new Next Steps process being offered by Hinton Rural Life Center. She is helping to coordinate the new cross racial/cultural training through Visions, Inc. and the Flamebuilders training process for young adults. She met with several of our Missional Networks to help them engage their communities and many of our pastors met with her to talk about how to improve their ministries. In the midst of her CVS work and church ministry she also gave birth to beautiful Olivia! We are blessed to be keeping her in our district as she will be serving Grace UMC here in Greensboro and will continue as a member of our Congregational Vitality Team.
Dr. Gary Shockley, the Conference Director of Congregational Development, has hired three new Congregational Vitality Strategists: Rev. Stephanie Hand, Kim Shockley and Rev. Rene Wilt. We will be hearing more in the months ahead about how they will relate to our district. We welcome them to this important work.
Renewal and Study Leave
This summer I have been granted permission from the Bishop and fellow Cabinet members to take a leave from July 6-Sept. 1. I am looking forward to this time away. I am always telling my pastors they should mind their spiritual, physical, and emotional health so I want to "practice what I preach." I am in great health so there is no hidden issue here. It is simply a time for me to breathe deeply and walk more closely with God and spend some important time with our children and grandchildren. Dr. Sam Moore will be the District Superintendent on call for me during this time. Lynne Gilbert and Landa Wallace will be here as always so you know you will be in good hands.

Our Networks have been doing outstanding ministries in their communities and I am very proud of the progress that they have made over these two years. In the upcoming months we want to be even more intentional about churches helping one another through partnerships and continuing to develop discipleship systems so that new Christians can be led to maturity in the faith and our long term members can learn to mentor new Christians. We have the opportunity to possibly participate in a Habitat for Humanity Renovation you will be hearing more about.
God's blessings,
Nancy B. Rankin
