Fishing in the Depths of Fallen Humanity

Evangelism was of utmost importance to our Lord Jesus. He began and ended His ministry with a call to spread the Gospel. From the very beginning of His ministry, His plan was to use disciples to make disciples. He called his first disciples, who were fishermen, to become fishers of men (Mark 1:17). Instead of continuing to cast their nets into the sea, He directed them to cast their nets into the depths of fallen humanity.

He gave them a new purpose for living with an eternal perspective because the difference between fishing for fish and fishing for men is profound. When you catch fish, they are alive, and then you watch them die. When you catch men, they are dead in sin, and then you watch them come alive in Christ.

The keys for effective fishing are similar whether you are fishing for fish or for men. Following are seven biblical principles for success!

1. Know Their Nature. As we fish for men, we need to know that they are spiritually dead (Eph. 2;1). The natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him (1 Cor. 2:14). They cannot see the light of the Gospel for "the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ" (2 Cor. 4:4). It is no wonder the disciples asked Jesus "Who then can be saved?" Jesus said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Mat. 19:24-26).

2. Be Properly Equipped. As we fish for spiritually dead men, we must be equipped with the Word of God, which is the seed that is needed to make them alive in Christ (1 Pet. 1:23). We also need to be equipped with doctrinally-sound Gospel tracts to give away after we share the Gospel.

3. Go Where They Are. Just as fish live in water and won't come to us, we must seek the lost because they are running from the true God. Many love the darkness or all that the world has to offer. Others are content in their apostate religions and will never seek the truth. This is why we go to Catholic Churches to evangelize on Resurrection Sunday and Christmas Eve.

4. Use the Right Lure. The only lure for catching fallen humanity is the Lord Jesus. He said, "When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32). If you use any other lure, you will only catch false converts.

5. Cast Your Line. This means sharing the Gospel and telling others about Jesus as He is revealed in His Word. Nothing can be caught until we do. "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ" (Rom. 10:17).

6. Be Patient. Fishing takes time. Don't give up. Trust God to draw the lost into the Gospel net. Jesus said, "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him" (John 6:44). Wait on the Spirit of God to use the Word of God to bring conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-11).

7. Reel in Your Catch. Reel them in by calling them to "repent and believe the Gospel" (Mark 1:15). Don't hook them and let them swim around without proclaiming the only saving response to the Gospel. Give them a sense of urgency! Today is the day of salvation; God doesn't promise anyone tomorrow!

May we all live with this eternal perspective. The only two things in this life that are eternal are the souls of men and the Word of God! Everything else will be destroyed in the end. In light of this let us spend more time seeking and evangelizing the lost for the glory of God. There is no greater joy than to see those who are dead in sin come alive in Christ! As we fish in the depths of fallen humanity, let us remember that God has only called us to be faithful, NOT fruitful. We can only take the Gospel from the Bible to the human ear. God must take it from the ear to the heart. Let us make our Lord's last command our first concern!

Mike recently preached a message on Becoming Fishers of Men, from Mark 1:14-18, at Northwest Community Church in Phoenix, AZ. Click here to watch the message.

God Is Sovereign in Salvation

One of the clearest presentations of God's sovereignty in salvation was preached by our pastor, Tom Pennington of Countryside Bible Church in Southlake, TX on June 5th. I have already listened to the message four times and continue to be blessed each time. The message, God Is Sovereign in Salvation, will encourage us all to be faithful witnesses for our Sovereign Lord and trust Him for drawing lost sinners to Jesus (John 6:44). Listen to the message here.

The Stubborn Power of Indoctrination

As we share the Gospel of grace to those who are lost in religion, we often see a stubborn resistance to believing God's Word. The underlying reason for this is the captivating power of indoctrination. Religious indoctrination is the process of imparting doctrine in an authoritative way using an extra-biblical source, such as a catechism. From the time children can think, their minds are taken captive to religious teachings and traditions. As they grow older, many of them develop a fierce loyalty to their religion and never seek a relationship with the true God.

There is a profound difference between religious indoctrination and biblical instruction. Those who have been instructed in God's Word, as the supreme authority for discerning truth from error, will be able to distinguish between God's ways and man's ways. In contrast, those who have been indoctrinated with extra biblical sources will become more loyal to their religion than to the true God of the Bible.

It is no wonder that religion has historically been the greatest enemy of Christ and His Word! Every time the religious elite of the Jews appeared in the Gospels, there is conflict and hostility. Whenever Jesus spoke of the religious leaders, He condemned them as fools and hypocrites. He deliberately defied their legalistic traditions, rituals, and self-righteous pretense. Fifteen hundred years later, when the Reformers began exposing the fatal errors of the Catholic religion with the objective truth of God's Word, they were met with great opposition and hostility. Many of the Reformers who had exchanged their religion for a relationship with Christ were brutally tortured and burned at the stake by the pope's army of Jesuits.

Religious pride and indoctrination may be the most powerful tool Satan uses to blind people from the truth. The apostle Paul
wrote: "The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" (2 Cor. 4:4). The destructive power of religious indoctrination is also what Satan uses to hold people captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:26). I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have heard, "I was born a Catholic and I will die a Catholic."

This supernatural blindness and bondage can only be overcome by the sovereign grace and supreme power of God's Word. As the Word of God is proclaimed, and the Spirit of God does His Work, men will be delivered from the power of darkness into the glorious light of God's kingdom. It is our Sovereign Lord who shines "in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Cor. 4:6). It is the truth of God's Word that sets captives free from the bondage of religious indoctrination and deception. The Lord Jesus said, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32).
Pope Claims Mary's Body Was Assumed Into Heaven

mary

Pope Francis asked for Mary to intercede for the oppressed and claimed to the thousands gathered to observe the "Feast of the Assumption" that she had been "assumed into Heaven body and soul." "To the Queen of Peace, who we contemplate today in heavenly glory, I wish to entrust once again the anxieties and sufferings of the people who, in many parts of the world, are innocent victims of persistent conflict," he said. The Feast of the Assumption marks the Roman Catholic belief that Mary ascended into Heaven and did not suffer a physical death, although most Catholics will agree that Scripture says nothing of Mary's assumption into heaven.

Letters from Around the World

Last Sunday, you gave a sermon at Northwest Community Church in Phoenix, AZ. You talked about the Catholic church and how they do not teach the Gospel and why you left the church. After the service I went up to talk to you briefly. I mentioned to you that I was also a former Catholic and asked how your family took the news of you leaving the church. You recommended your book Preparing For Eternity which I bought from your wife. Once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. It is so true and you worded it brilliantly. Thank you for taking those few minutes to talk to me. T.S., Phoenix, AZ

I am Christian and my husband is a Roman Catholic. I didn't understand the Catholic view of salvation and simply thought it was just another denomination. My husband is so zealous for Catholicism because he believes it is the only true church and he won't listen to God's Word. We have children together and I am tired of him telling them lies that will lead them to hell. He has thrown many of my Bibles and devotionals away. My husband is so stuck in following the Roman Catholic Church that he will defend it to his death. The Catholic Church makes people obsessive in their religion. They don't let people think, and control them through the mass, the priests, the sacraments and many heretical teachings. I wish I had known more about the Catholic Church before I got married. I love my husband, but his rejection of God's Truth makes me wonder if he will ever believe the true Jesus. Name Withheld

Mike's Comment: It is because of the many e-mails, letters, and phone calls like this one that inspired me to write the article on the power of religious indoctrination. For the wives of unbelieving husbands, the apostle Peter teaches them to "be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct" (1 Pet. 3:1-2). For those who reject God's Word, we "must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will" (2 Tim. 2:24-26).

Lutherans Declare Unity with Catholics

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted overwhelmingly last week to approve a declaration of unity with the Roman Catholic Church in an endeavor to "enumerate the many points of agreement between Lutherans and Catholics." Pope Should Speak of Catholic Violence

Pope Francis says it is wrong to equate violence with Islam, adding that "I do not believe that it is true or right that Islam is terrorist." He said, "If I speak of Islamic violence, I should speak of Catholic violence."

Mike's Comment: Personally, I wish the pope would speak of his church's history of violence. The Catholic Church tortured, mutilated, murdered and destroyed millions of people who would not bow their knee to Catholic popes during the dark ages and the Inquisition. The wickedness perpetrated against humanity by the pope's religion is beyond comprehension. A documentary of the Catholic Inquisition and its torture tools can be seen here.

New DVD with Two Messages
The Lord Jesus said, "I am the bread of life....so that one may eat of it and not die." Catholics believe Jesus was speaking literally and developed their dogma of transubstantiation from this passage. Mike explains how "eating" is analogous to "believing" and how those who receive Jesus by faith will never experience spiritual death.
The second message exposes the pope's outlandish statements that nullify and oppose the infallible Word of God. Yet, people love him because of his inclusive plan of salvation and his false humility.
Preparing for Eternity Should We Trust God's Word or Religious Traditions?

This book will equip you to reach those who are lost in religion. Author Mike Gendron answers over 100 commonly asked questions by Catholics using the power and authority of God's Word. Equip yourself with the Scriptures that will set Catholics free from religious bondage and deception.
Use This Gospel Tract to Show the Supreme Authority of God's Word

The nature of deception is such that people do not know they are deceived until they are confronted with the truth. This tract helps people evaluate and question their source for truth. They will discover the Bible is the supreme authority for life's most critical question - What must I do to be saved?

The Sufficiency of our Lord Jesus Christ

God's Gospel reveals all the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished to save sinners from the power, punishment, and ultimately, the presence of sin: righteousness had to be perfected, divine justice had to be satisfied, blood had to be shed, redemption had to be paid, sins had to be forgiven, reconciliation had to be achieved, death had to be conquered, and salvation had to be secured.
What a glorious Savior we have to proclaim!
