Religious Pride and Indoctrination

The greatest obstacle to learning the truth is to believe that you already know it. Some religious people have a dogged determination to never change their position on doctrinal issues. Even when opposing views are presented from God's authoritative word, they refuse to consider the possibility that they could be wrong.

Religious indoctrination is one of the most powerful tools Satan uses to blind people from the light of the Gospel (2 Cor. 4:4). Many former Catholics have said they were indoctrinated at an early age with a set of religious beliefs that they were never to question. When I was being catechized as a young boy, I was strictly forbidden to think independently of the church's authority. Looking back, I can see that I was pressured to submit my mind, intellect and will to the "infallible" teachings of the "one true church."

Religious pride is another powerful tool Satan uses to hold people captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:24-26). Religious pride usually takes the form of spiritual arrogance or a fierce, unbending loyalty to an institution. Many Roman Catholics refuse to engage in spiritual conversations with non-Catholics because they are so proud of their religion. They are indoctrinated with the false and fatal belief that the Catholic Church is the one true church and necessary for salvation. We were also brainwashed with the fear that we would forfeit our salvation if we ever left the Catholic Church. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we read: "Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation...Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it" (paragraph 846).

I witnessed this religious pride in my uncle, a Catholic priest of 61 years. He spent 30 years in southeast Asia leading Hindus and Buddhists to his religion, but not to Jesus Christ. After he returned to America, I was delighted to share God's Gospel with him every time we got together. However, each time he rebuked me with a condescending attitude for daring to question his priestly position of authority. Blinded by religious pride, he belittled my references to the Gospel of grace because of his stubborn confidence in his priestly rituals and sacraments. Clearly, religious pride is one of the greatest obstacles to genuine saving faith. Many Catholics have an unbending loyalty to earthly priests who offer the same daily sacrifices which can never take away sin (Heb. 10:11).

Satan does a masterful job of using man's religions to conceal God's glorious Gospel of grace. He and his pawns, who disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, deceive the unwary through a variety of false religious systems (2 Cor. 11:14-15). To be deceived about one's relationship with God is the most dangerous and perilous position. To leave this earth embracing a false gospel will result in the most horrifying existence that man could ever experience. Those who die in such a state have no recourse, no escape, and no second chance. May God give us all humble and teachable spirits and a desire to know the truth of His Word!
Different Understandings of Eschatology

The Bible is a glorious revelation of God that includes His creation, His plan of redemption for His people, the conflict between two kingdoms, and His intention to restore the earth to its original condition that existed before the fall. Throughout church history, the Bible has been interpreted in different ways, but this is not because the Scriptures are lacking in clarity. Some factors that may cause people to interpret the Bible differently include: using an improper hermeneutic, reading into the Scriptures what it does not say, following personalities and traditions instead of testing everything with Scripture, and elevating human reason and experience above the authority of God's Word. The Word of God can be best understood when it is read in a literal, normal, and plain sense. A normal reading of Scripture is synonymous with a consistent literal, grammatical, historical hermeneutic.

Throughout church history, all areas of Biblical doctrine have been studied, recognized, and accepted. In the first two centuries, the doctrine of the inspiration of the Bible and the canon of Scripture were recognized and affirmed. Later, in the third and fourth centuries, it was the study of Christology which dealt with the human and divine nature of Jesus. In the 16th century, the Reformers dealt with soteriology, the doctrine of justification. Now, the doctrine of eschatology, which is the study of the end times, appears to be a central focus of study and conversation.

Tragically, many of today's evangelicals, who embrace the biblical soteriology of the Reformers, are also embracing a Roman Catholic eschatology that the Reformers never challenged. Using an allegorical approach to eschatology, Roman Catholicism rejects all the prophecies and covenants that declare Jesus will have a literal, physical reign on the earth from the throne of David. This amillennial view regards the "thousand years," which is mentioned six times in Revelation 20:1-6, as symbolic. They say it has already begun and is identical with the church age, with Christ reigning as King in the hearts of His people.

It is difficult to understand why evangelicals would allegorize the Scriptures that clearly teach a physical, earthly reign of the Lord Jesus Christ on the throne of David (Luke 1:32). Why would they deny the glorious reign of King Jesus who will be sent by His Father to restore and refresh the earth to its pre-fall condition? (Acts 3:19-26; 2 Sam. 7:12-17; Dan. 2:44). The kingdom of Jesus will have blessings that have never been seen before, including peace and righteousness (Isaiah 2:4, 11:3-4, 32:1,17, 65:21-22, Zech. 8:4-5), good health, and long life (Isaiah 35:5,6, 65:20), the removal of the divine curse on the earth due to the sin of man (Romans 8:18-23), and a restored earth which will produce an abundance of food (Joel 3:18, Amos 9:13, Psalm 72:16, Zech. 8:12, Isaiah 35:1, Ezekiel 36:34-35). Also in this amazing Kingdom, "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord" (Isaiah 11:9).

The Millennium is the fulfillment of God's purpose in glorifying His exalted Son. All of His redeemed saints and all the nations of the world will worship and praise Him for being the King of kings! "All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it" (Psalm 22:27-31).

Letters from Around the World

Mike, The more your ministry is looked into, the greater has become my eternal gratitude for the forthright, uncompromising, and loving outreach you have had to the religious group that so denies Christ's sufficiency. I commend you for your honest appraisal of the Catholic underpinning of Justice Scalia and his son. It certainly ran counter to that of many Protestants. What are they really "protesting"? Not much. When I think of the childhood I had, being raised in the spiritual darkness of Catholicism, it was irresistible joy when the Lord broke through to my ignorance, and showed me His unmerited grace. May His grace continue to bless you and produce fruit in the opportunities to speak here and abroad of His forgiveness in Christ alone. D.K., Kernersville, NC

One has to be careful on whose interpretation of Sacred Scripture one believes. Left to my own, without the teachings of the Catholic Church is shaky ground to me. Tradition along with the Church fathers and councils are not to be neglected. I choose to stand with them on most issues, and would much rather spend my eternity with my Catholic friends than many who hate the Catholic Church. Even though I am a Lutheran, I love the Catholic church and am so thankful for her. I do not see a conflict with the Pope and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I believe he is a devoted, committed follower of Jesus, and not trying to take His power or authority away from Jesus. He does not make his statements in haste or without deep connection to the understanding of our Faith. David, Internet

David, You are right that we have to be careful with the interpretation of Scripture. That is why God's Word gives so many warnings about false teachers who pervert the Gospel and teach another Jesus. The Lord Jesus warned us that the end times would be marked by great deception and a growing apostasy. More than ever we need to test every man's teaching with the infallible, inerrant, inspired Word of God. The Scriptures, not tradition, must become our supreme authority for discerning truth from error. Only God's Word can set us free from the bondage of religious deception (John 8:31-32).

Dear Mike, I have been conversing a lot with Catholics on various web sites. They are being told so many lies, I try to refute them through the scriptures and speak the truth in love, but I get the nastiest comments, I am called stupid and an idiot and told I need help, that I have no authority and no ordination. Christ and His Word is my authority. My heart goes out to these Catholics who are caught in this false apostate church with all her lies. Please pray that the Lord will thicken my skin and grant me courage like the brave Reformers who were martyred for the Gospel. Thank you for your prayers and your ministry, we love to get your News letters! Keep up the good fight of faith! I pray we will see many Catholics in heaven that were born again! J.B., St. Jacques, Canada
Mike Interviewed on False Converts in the Church

Janet Mefferd interviewed Mike concerning the many false converts in our churches today. The most terrifying words Christians could ever hear would be if Jesus Christ said to them, "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness" (Matthew 7:23). On judgment day, those horrifying words will be heard, not by a few, but by many who called Jesus "Lord" but never repented of their iniquities. You can hear the interview on the Janet Mefferd Today radio program. The Gospel tract, True Faith or False Hope can be ordered here. It can be given as an excellent reminder for all professing Christians to examine themselves to make sure they have genuine saving faith.

Catholics Must Submit their Mind, Will, and Intellect to Papal Authority

Roman Catholics are morally bound to believe whatever the pope teaches, even when he does not speak "ex Cathedra," from the chair of Peter. This means that Catholics are forbidden to believe what the Word of God teaches unless the pope teaches the same doctrine. Following are two compelling laws that have been established to control what Catholics think and believe:

"Each individual must receive the faith and law from the Church with unquestioning submission and obedience of the intellect and the will. ... We have no right to ask reasons of the Church, any more than of Almighty God. ... We are to take with unquestioning docility whatever instruction the Church gives us" (The Catholic World, August 1871, vol. xiii, pp. 58089).

"The faithful, for their part, are obliged to submit to their bishops' decision, made in the name of Christ, in matters of faith and morals, and to adhere to it with a ready and respectful allegiance of mind. This loyal submission of the will and intellect must be given, in a special way, to the authentic teaching authority of the Roman Pontiff, even when he does not speak ex cathedra in such wise, indeed, that his supreme teaching authority be acknowledged with respect, and the one sincerely adhere to decision made by him, conformably with his manifest mind and intention." Lumen Gentium

Mike's Comment: We must encourage Catholics to submit to the supreme authority of God's Word and to destroy every argument raised against the knowledge of God. The Bible instructs all of us to take every thought captive to the obedience of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 10:5).
Pope Causing Concerns Among Conservatives

Conservatives worry that behind the gentle facade lies a dangerous reformer who is diluting Catholic teaching on moral issues like homosexuality and divorce while focusing on social problems such as climate change and economic inequality. Conservatives fear that Francis' words and deeds may eventually rupture the 1.2 billion member Church. Read more.

Pope Declares Mother Angelica is in Heaven

The Catholic nun who founded the Eternal Word Television Network in 1981 has entered into eternity at the age of 92. Pope Francis said she is now in heaven. Read more.

Mike's Comment: How does the pope know who is in heaven? By his own teachings he has proven he does not know the exclusivity of the Gospel. If Mother Angelica could return and do one more TV show, she would tell her world-wide audience that she now knows the truth and she would apologize for misleading people about the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Proclaiming the Gospel Tracts Were Distributed During the Pope's Visit to Mexico

Albuquerque residents Jeff Katt, Marc Gallegos, Nate C'de Baca, and others were sowing the seed of God's imperishable Word during the visit of Pope Francis to Mexico. They passed out the Spanish version of the Proclaiming the Gospel  tract:  "Roman Catholicism: Scripture vs. Tradition." Their intent was to tell Catholics that believing what the Bible says about salvation is the only way to heaven. "If they think they are going to pray the rosary and that's going to forgive them, that's not salvation," Katt said. "The Bible is very clear that we're saved by Jesus Christ alone, through faith alone. And it is scripture that is complete." Katt said he passes out the literature regularly in various cities, but chose Ciudad Juárez because of the Pope's visit. When asked how Mexican Catholics, who hold the traditions of the Catholic church very close to their hearts, have received his message, he said the border town was one of the most welcoming he's visited. The Sufficiency of our Lord Jesus Christ

God's Gospel reveals all the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished to save sinners from the power, punishment, and ultimately, the presence of sin: righteousness had to be perfected, divine justice had to be satisfied, blood had to be shed, redemption had to be paid, sins had to be forgiven, reconciliation had to be achieved, death had to be conquered, and salvation had to be secured.
What a glorious Savior we have to proclaim!
