The Danger of Following Religious Traditions

The Apostle Paul's zeal for following the traditions of his religion led him to relentlessly persecute the church of Jesus Christ. Although as a Jew he was entrusted with the oracles of God, he was so indoctrinated with religious traditions that he tried to destroy Christ's church. He wrote: "I persecuted the church of God ... being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers" (Gal. 1:13-14). The unconverted Paul bore witness to having a zeal for God but not according to knowledge (Rom. 10:2). He had a superior knowledge of his religion, but not a spiritual knowledge of God which God imparts only to those who exchange their religion for a relationship with Christ (1 Cor. 2:14). His religious pride and arrogance had blinded him from the glorious light of the Gospel (Phil. 3:5-6; 2 Cor. 4:4). When God gave him spiritual eyes to see the truth of His Word, he was miraculously transformed (Acts 9:8-22). No longer a merciless persecutor of the church, he was now a passionate evangelist for the church.

Tragically, many Roman Catholics are like the unconverted Paul. They have a zeal for God but not according to knowledge. Many have a gratifying and stubborn-hearted knowledge of their religious traditions, but they do not know the all-sufficient Savior as He is gloriously revealed in Scripture. They seek to become righteous before God because they do not know God's righteousness requires perfect righteousness, which they can never achieve. Like the Jews who were "ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness" (Rom. 10:3). Being ignorant of God's righteousness, Catholics believe it is infused over time through the sacraments instead of imputed instantly by faith (Rom. 4:5). As fallen people, they are doing whatever they can to cover up their guilt by participating in the rituals of the Catholic faith to gain a right standing with God.

The Catholic religious system misleads gullible people into believing they can achieve God's standard of righteousness by their sin-tainted works of righteousness. In fact, they are taught that they will never be permanently justified before God until they become righteous by their own efforts. Roman Catholicism teaches that justification is obtained through the sacrament of baptism, lost by mortal sin, and regained through the sacrament of penance. Catholics believe they can become more righteous through participation in the sacrifice of the mass and doing good works, which in turn merit eternal life (Council of Trent, Session 6, Canon 24). Since they don't have a spiritual understanding of God and His holiness, they think they can bring God down to their level and raise man to God's level. This is how Catholics can refer to the leader of their apostate religion as "Holy Father." God has alarming words to say to such religious people: "You thought that I was one like yourself, but now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you" (Psalm 50:21).

The only hope any of us have is to come to the same understanding as Paul, that is to count all of our religious activity as rubbish in order that we may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of our own that comes from the law; but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God (Phil 3:8-9). The free gift of God's perfect righteousness is our only passport into heaven (Rom. 5:17). It is given to those who repent of their own filthy rags of righteousness and trust in Christ alone (Isa. 64:6).

Mass of Reparation Offered for Sacrilege

A Mass of Reparation, in which the Eucharistic Christ was offered as a propitiatory sacrifice, was deemed necessary after the pope's visit to the Philippines. Evidently, a sacrilege was committed when so many hands touched the Eucharist in an irreverent way as it was distributed among the thousands who attended the pope's Mass. Those who were unable to attend the Mass of Reparation were asked to recite a prayer with the words in the following paragraph. Note how many times the sufficiency and finished work of Christ's redemption is denied.

"I intend to atone for the coldness of so many Christians who pass before Thy churches and sometimes before the very Tabernacle
in which Thou art pleased to remain at all hours with loving impatience to give Thyself to Thy faithful people, and do not so much as bend the knee before Thee. I offer Thee in reparation for this grievous negligence. I acknowledge Thy presence in the Blessed Sacrament, and by this act of adoration I intend to atone for the carelessness of so many Christians. By my adoration I intend to compensate Thee for the many wounds which Thy Heart suffers daily in the profaning of churches where Thou art pleased to dwell beneath the sacramental veils to be adored and loved by all Thy faithful people. In reparation for so many acts of irreverence, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood which Thou shed." Read more.

Mike's Response: This grieves my heart to see the spiritual blindness of so many devout Roman Catholics. Clearly, the prince of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers from the light of the Gospel and the glory of Christ (2 Cor. 4:4). Only when they turn from the worship of a false Christ to the true Christ of the Bible will the veil of blindness be removed (2 Cor. 3:15-16).

Letters From Around the World

Mike, I have lost my son to the corrupt teaching of Matthew Vines. At one time my son publicly confessed his sin of homosexuality and was baptized and things were going well. Then one day someone gave him the book God and the Gay Christian by Matthew Vines which say you can have it both ways. You can have your sin and God. However, that is not what God says! We asked our son whom will you listen to? He chose Mr. Vines and therefore he can no longer have fellowship with us. Name Withheld

Mike, How timely this is! Just a few days ago I had a conversation with a total stranger who claimed to be a believer, but condoned her gay friends as being good Christians, especially the one whose RCC priest told him it was okay. Funny thing is that the conversation started out really friendly, but I was reassured by the end of the conversation that I have a punitive God and that I was "black and white", "closed minded", and "judgemental" because I believe God's Word and His loving correction. She wanted nothing to do with my God. M.B., Indianapolis, IN

Mike, I had not heard about this new group of false converts; those who justify staying in sin and just adding Jesus. I can see this mindset in most of the modern neo-evangelical churches. In order to be relevant to the culture, we've given ourselves permission to compromise God's Word. Many "Christian" authors have promoted this blending. Also, I think we want the world to like us, think we're cool, and not reject us as some outdated, conservative Christians. Too bad! A lot of people will go to a Christless eternity because we didn't have the guts to tell them the truth! D.B., Gresham, OR

Mike, Thank you for such good newsletters! We watched the video on the Inquisition and we were blown away! Our knowledge was fairly vague with regard to what all happened over the course of those 600 years! We will be sharing that video! Since we first met you several years ago when you spoke at the Tulsa Prophecy Conference and again at The Understanding the Times Conference, we have been on quite a journey ourselves. So, that video fills in a large gap of historical facts. We wonder why there are so many Christian denominations nowadays. We believe it is because many have 'fallen away' from the real gospel; the Gospel of repentance, and obedience in Faith, not as a means of Salvation, but as a result of His Salvation! G. and L. T., Blanco, TX

Homosexuals Receive VIP Treatment with Pope

The Vatican did something it has never done before by giving a group of homosexual Catholics VIP seats at Pope Francis' weekly audience. New Ways Ministry officials were pleased that they had been invited to sit up front by Monsignor Gaenswein, the one who dispenses the coveted reserved tickets for the pope's audiences. Gaenswein for years had been the top aide to Pope Benedict XVI who had permanently prohibited New Ways Ministry from ministering to gays after determining in 1999 that they didn't sufficiently adhere to church teaching on the "intrinsic evil" of homosexual acts.

The first message:
The Coming One World Religion

Our Most Popular Gospel Tract

This 16-panel tract forces Roman Catholics to choose between two of their authorities for truth - their Bible or their religious traditions. It is impossible to believe both since they oppose one another on the key doctrines of salvation. The tract also shows the two paths to eternity - the wide road according to Catholicism and the narrow road according to the Bible.

The Supremacy and  Sufficiency of our Lord Jesus Christ

God's Gospel reveals all the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished to save sinners from the power, punishment, and ultimately, the presence of sin: righteousness had to be perfected, divine justice had to be satisfied, blood had to be shed, redemption had to be paid, sins had to be forgiven, reconciliation had to be achieved, death had to be conquered, and salvation had to be secured.
What a glorious Savior we have to proclaim!
