Maintaining Christian Unity by Mike Gendron
The use of technology for public ministry has been a wonderful tool for reaching a greater audience throughout the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, it should also give us cause for concern. In addition to the obvious benefits of the internet, it can be used to weaken or undermine the unity of the church by causing discord, conflict, and division among born-again Christians. With just a few keystrokes on a blog or social media site, one can set a blazing forest fire of discontent and animosity among Christians. Some Christian bloggers are quick to make faulty accusations, but slow to apologize. Several attacks have been critical of doctrinally-sound teachers because of their remote connection to someone they disagree with theologically. To make matters worse, many of these bloggers have a prideful, critical spirit coupled with a "must win" mentality. Their selfish ambition spawns ungodly rivalries with other ministries.
The Apostle Paul warns us, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves" (Phil. 2:3). Doing ministry out of selfish ambition and a prideful spirit is something I have been guilty of in the past, and something I need to continually guard against. It helps me to remember how the Lord Jesus was mocked, falsely accused, spat upon and beaten, yet He was never defensive, or accusing, or demanding, or bitter. He experienced the greatest humiliation before God exalted Him to supremacy over all creation! All born-again Christians must strive to emulate His humility and be in harmony with one another, so that with one voice, we glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 15:5-6). Those who humble themselves under the mighty hand of God, for His glory, will be exalted in His time (1 Pet. 5:6).
Factional divisions within the Body of Christ occur when Christians choose to follow their favorite personalities instead of Christ and His Word. We can learn from Paul's admonition to the Corinthian church in which some members were divided over following Paul or Apollos or Cephas or Christ. Paul exhorted them to avoid such divisions and to have the same mind and judgment (1 Cor. 1:10-12). He also warned the Galatians, "Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, or envying one another" (Gal. 5:26). The apostle also had to exhort the Ephesian church to "walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Eph. 4:1-3).
Unity among Christians was of great importance to our Lord. He prayed for Christians to maintain the same unity He shares with His Father so that the world would believe (John 17:21). We need to recognize that the unbelieving world has access to social media and, therefore, strive for Christian unity. The best way we can do this is with "compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you" (Col. 3:12-13). We need to put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony, and let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts (Col. 3:14-15).
Knowing that one of Satan's major objectives is to cause division in the Body of Christ and to ruin its witness to the world, we need to make sure we are working to accomplish our Lord's mission and not Satan's. There is a major difference between maintaining the unity of the Spirit, which is of God, and seeking a false ecumenical unity with unbelievers, which is of Satan. May God help us to seek His will for His glory and purpose!

Christ Is Our Model for Spiritual Unity
Pastor Jesse Barrington of Grace Life Church of Dallas, recently delivered a powerful message on Unity in the Church Part 4 from Philippians 2:1-8. His message will encourage and exhort you to emulate the humility of Christ for unity in His Church. Listen here.
We also highly recommend a four-minute video entitled Defensive People are Prideful by Mack Tomlinson. Anytime we sense defensiveness in ourselves or others, it is a barometer indicating pride or immaturity. We cannot become defensive if we are going to exhibit humility and teachability. Watch here. |
The Lord Jesus Christ, The Alpha and Omega
The more we reflect on the person and work of Jesus Christ, the more we realize how indebted we are to His grace! May our love for Jesus increase and our hearts resonate with the inspired words of the Apostle Paul: "Those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again" (2 Cor. 5:15). Take a moment to meditate on the Lord Jesus Christ and all that He accomplished for His people.
From A to Z, He is the...
Almighty and awesome advocate, abased for aliens, adulterers and alcoholics
Blessed bread of life, the bridegroom bludgeoned and bloodied for His bride
Creator and Christ, crucified on a cross for crooks and criminals
Divine deity, who descended and died to deliver dirty, depraved degenerates from death
Exalted eternal Emmanuel who endured enmity to enrich His enemies
Faithful and fairest forerunner who freely forfeited His life to forgive failures
Glorious God, goaded and gashed to give the Gospel of grace to the guilty
Holy and heavenly head who humbled Himself to heal the helpless and hopeless
Incomparable "I AM," the incarnation of innocence, insulted for idolaters

Pope Says God Told Him to Resign

The former pope Benedict has claimed that his resignation in February was prompted by God, who told him to do it during a "mystical experience" that lasted for months. As the first pope to step down in 600 years, the 86-year-old said: God had inspired in him with an "absolute desire" to dedicate his life to prayer rather than push on as pope. Benedict's remarks are in direct contrast with the explanation he gave when he announced his resignation stating: "My strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry." Italian press reports have recently claimed he was frustrated by a network of influence built up at the Vatican by a pro-gay lobby of prelates. Read more.
Mike's comment: How ironic that the pope heard an audible word from God to resign, and he obeyed, yet when he was confronted with the written Word of God, he continued in rebellion. He should have resigned upon reading "there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim. 2:5). |

Letters From Around the World
Mike, You should know Catholics are not taking your slander and abuse sitting down. They are hitting back with both fists. In Catholic Answer forums, some apologists take your misleading articles and statements and point out your distortions and outright lies. They are very helpful since you are so skilled with your deceit and lies. You are a true enemy of Christ and his one church. Robert C.
On my way to worship this morning, I passed by a Catholic Church as people were exiting from the sacrifice of the mass. I noticed the priest speaking to the people so I got out to speak to him. I asked him if he had a few minutes because I wanted to share some good news. After sharing the Gospel, I called him to repent and believe the Gospel. I reminded him that there is only one Mediator and that Jesus abolished the priesthood when He offered up Himself once for all sin (Hebrews 10). This man was provoked to hostility, and began to rebuke me for saying such a thing, that I was heading for condemnation and needed to repent, and that if I didn't understand the Hebrew and I didn't know what I was talking about. At one point, I told him his path was the path to destruction. He grabbed my arm and shoved me and became more irate. The Lord was my shield the whole time, and I offered him your Greatest News tract and he rejected it with a despising look. A few onlookers watched in sort of shock. I continue to pray for boldness for all who name the Name of Christ. M. G., Albuquerque, NM
Hi M. G., Your email made me smile because of the camaraderie we share with you. Your story is like so many we experience! We praise God for your willingness to be a humble servant in delivering the Lord's only message of salvation. Regardless of the priest's response, you were successful because you delivered the Gospel. Your letter is an encouragement to all of us. Jane Gendron
My son-in-law at age 17 asked the priest why should he confess his sins to him. He told the priest he was going to pray directly to God. The priest slapped him across the face. He turned and walked away and never returned to the Catholic Church. J.S., Lake Superior, MI
"Keep this garbage to yourself. Shame on you, you would attach this crap to our car window while we are inside our Catholic Church having Sunday service. That's so cowardly, like a snake in the grass." Anonymous, Minneapolis, MN
Mike's Comment. This is a typical response from Catholics who find the Word of God in our Gospel tracts on their windshields. It is ironic that they think whoever put it on their car was a coward and yet they sent the letter anonymously.

Unshackled or Deceived?
There are many ministries that mean well but often cause more spiritual harm than good. One such ministry is "Unshackled", which dramatizes true life stories of persons set free from the bonds of sin through the power and love of Jesus Christ. Last month they asked me to submit my testimony "as an opportunity to proclaim the gospel to millions." When I went on their web site, I quickly realized they were promoting a compromised gospel coupled with a sinner's prayer for salvation.
I responded to them with the following email: Hi Karen, I pray you will take this constructive criticism with a humble teachable spirit. On your link How to Get to Heaven, you leave out important parts of the Gospel including the resurrection of Jesus, and the righteousness that God requires for entrance into heaven. There is also no call to repentance (Mark 1:15, Luke 24:47). Then you dare to say that If you sincerely prayed that prayer, you are now a child of God! Please know that the only saving response to the Gospel is repentance and faith. I would like to submit the testimony of God's saving grace in my life after you make the necessary changes and corrections. Please see the Gospel presentation on our web site.
Unfortunately, the folks at "Unshackled" chose not to make the necessary changes for the purity of the Gospel and the sanctity of the church. They continue to mislead people on life's most important issue -- how to be reconciled to God. |

Statue of Mary Headed to Rome From Portugal
The statue of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima will travel all the way from Portugal to the Vatican, where Pope Francis is planning on consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The "Marian Day" ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at the Vatican October 13th, will be attended by hundreds of religious movements and institutions that have a special Marian devotion. One World Church Gaining Momentum
The third annual conference established for the building of the One World Church was held in North Carolina last month. Kingdom-building (saving the planet, disarmament, eliminating poverty), the downplaying of the importance of doctrine, contemporary music, and contemplative prayer are four of the elements that are uniting evangelicals, liberals and conservatives, Catholics and Protestants, Christians and non-Christians, and thus creating the end-time one-world "church." Speakers were represented from Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Muslim faiths. Read more here. |

Indulgence Purifies Soul in Honor of Mary
Anyone who visits a Catholic church with the intention of honoring Our Lady of the Angels and recites the Creed, the Our Father, and prays for the Pope's intentions, received a plenary indulgence on Aug. 2. The indulgence was a way to focus on the importance of Mary and the Franciscan tradition in the Church. The Catholic Church teaches that after a sin is forgiven, an unhealthy attachment to created things still remains. Indulgences remove that unhealthy attachment, purifying the soul so that it is more fit to enter heaven. Indulgences are either plenary (full) or partial. A plenary indulgence also requires that the individual be in the state of grace and have complete detachment from sin. The person must also sacramentally confess their sins and receive Communion up to about twenty days before or after the indulgenced act. Read more.
Mike's comment: Indulgences deny and reject the efficacy of Christ's shed blood as the only purification for sin (1 John 1:7; Heb. 1:3). In honoring Mary, the Catholic Church dishonors the One who is worthy of all honor, praise and glory.

Eucharistic Miracle or a Lying Sign and Wonder
The priest at Mary Mother of the Church said he heard a voice and saw a flash of light while kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament. "Ring the bells so that everyone comes and I will perform a miracle in the Eucharist," the voice declared. When people gathered, he said he "approached the tabernacle and upon opening it the host was covered in blood." According to the priest, the voice also told him to establish an adoration chapel and to allow any scientific study necessary to confirm the miracle. Read more.
Mike's comment: The Lord Jesus warned us, "False Christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect (Mat. 24:24). The Apostle Paul also warned, "The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders" (2 Thes. 2:9).
