Art of Discovery Exhibit on View in the School Library
Through Wednesday, May 21
We are happy to announce that the Bellevue Art Museum's
Art of Discovery exhibit has arrived and is on view in our school library! The title of this mini-exhibit is Exploring People in Art: Portraits and Stories. The exhibit is comprised of artwork from the Seattle Junior League's collection of works by Pacific Northwest artists. Many families were able to see this installation during Art Walk. This is an amazing opportunity to bring the museum to our school and expose students and their families to museum quality works of art. This mini exhibit will be on display in the Dickinson school library until May 21. Art Smart volunteers will be bringing classes through to explore the exhibit and discuss fun ways to examine each piece.

Boxtops and Labels are Due Soon
Tuesday, May 27
Some boxtops expire in June, so go through your cupboards and see what you have so that we can get as many points as possible by the end of the year. Boxtops/Campbell soup Labels are due May 27.

Dickinson/Explorer Carnival

Friday, June 6, 5:30-9pm

Our school carnival is just around the corner! Come to our schools' annual Carnival to celebrate a fantastic year and enjoy carnival games, prizes, outdoor inflatables, a cupcake walk, an outdoor street hockey and agility course from Overtime Athletics, and our first ever Xbox dance party and pie eating contest. Rain or shine. Food vendors will offer hot dogs, pizza, drinks and cotton candy, so plan to come hungry!

We need a lot of volunteers to make this a successful and fun event for the school. If older siblings or friends need community service hours, we would love to have them help out. If you are able to help out in any way, please email  kbarrysmith@dickinsonptsa.org so we can start planning!

Art Walk 2014
A Great Night for Dickinson & Explorer Artists!
Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's annual Art Walk and Ice Cream Social a huge success. It was a fun evening for our students and their families.  The kids were so happy to show off their artwork while they enjoyed an ice cream. A huge thank you to Kristen Davidson for organizing the event and making it one the best yet, and to all of our amazing Art Smart volunteers who visit the classrooms every month to ensure our students have access to the visual arts at school.

C:\Users\Carol\Pictures\Bainbridge 10.JPG

Seven 4th and 5th Grade Math Club teams went to the Washington State Math Competition on Bainbridge Island on Saturday, May 3. The 4th and 5th graders all competed as fifth graders at the competition. The 4th graders who participated were: Adrienne Bond, Dhwani Porecha, Emma Robins, Grace Schimke, Ishaan Mirchandani, Jamie Baias, Karena Lu, Karli Kostoff, Kate Cannistra, Kavya Gajjar, Purvakshi Rathore, Olivia Woolsey, Shreya Mundra, and Sophie Nohle.  The 5th graders who participated were: Ajay Gupta, Hayden, Chu, Isheta Cherukuri, Rahan Shankar, Rushav Dash, Seth Kreysar, Shrey Srivastava, Tyler Chu, Vanathi Govindasamy, and Viraj Goyal.

These math club students worked very hard to prepare for the competition by not only their participation in math club but with the practice materials I sent home with them, and also by coming to the Mock Competition Practice after school. Their efforts really paid off. Each team brought back medals, ribbons, or both this year! This is quite an accomplishment! Below is how the awards were given out:

Session I: Significant Problem (An hour long very challenging math problem)

Superior Work (Medals)

Excellent Work (Ribbons)

Session II: Five Strand Tests (Twenty minute five problem tests on: Number Sense, Measurement, Geometric Sense, Algebraic Sense, and Probability and Statistics)

Superior Work (Medals)

Excellent Work (Ribbons)

Team ED5A: Ajay Gupta, Seth Kreysar, and Shrey Srivastava. This team won Medals for Session I and Ribbons for Session II.  Awesome job boys!

Team ED5B: Ishaan Mirchandani, Rahan Shankar, and Viraj Goyal. This team won Ribbons for Session I and Session II. Super job boys!

I am so proud of every team and every student for their commitment to do their personal best at the WSMC Math Competition. All in all, the kids had a wonderful time on Bainbridge Island and represented our school well with their strong teamwork and great effort at the competition. They truly were amazing at this competition! Below is a sampling of just a few of the many photos that were sent to me by the parents that captured the essence of the fun the twenty-five 4th and 5th Grade Math Club students had competing at the WSMC competition on Bainbridge Island!

Sincerely,

Carol Woodard

3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Math Club Coach
