Celebrating 17 Years!
Join us as we celebrate 17 years in Downtown Summerville with a reception with the artists!

17 years ago, a group of artists along with Summerville DREAM and the Town thought that art should be a part of Summerville.  Art Central opened on "Short" Central avenue back before it was a quaint cobblestoned street lined with boutiques & restaurants. We are so happy to continue to be part of our now-vibrant Downtown! Come celebrate with us on Third Thursday 5-8pm. There will also be live music & fun all over Downtown for Third Thursday!

BIRDS statue dedication
Third Thursday Oct. 15th 5:30pm

The 14th sculpture in Summerville's B.I.R.D.S. Project has come to rest on a twisty twig at Art Central Gallery and will be dedicated at 5:30pm during "Third Thursday" on October 15th.

The life-size Painted Bunting, by sculptor Karla Runquist of Macomb, IL, has been generously sponsored by Alix and Don Kassing, as a celebration of the 17th Anniversary of the Art Central Gallery, and the artists invite you to celebrate with them at the gallery that evening, beginning at 5:30.

Karla Runquist has participated in numerous Sculpture in the South shows in Summerville and her works are in collections all over the United States and across the world, including Holland and Japan.

The B.I.R.D.S. Project is a joint venture of three organizations: the Beidler Forest Audubon Center, Summerville D.R.E.A.M. and Sculpture in the South, with three goals as their focus:
1. Introduce residents and visitors to the native birds in Summerville;
2. bring more public sculpture into public places for everyone to enjoy, free of charge; and
3. through the hunting of the birds, following Mike Dawson's funny limerick clues, help residents and tourists discover the exciting shops and restaurants that they might not have been aware of in the Historic District.

Brochures with a map and the limerick clues providing the locations of the birds that have been installed, as well as those who are in the process of being created, are available at the Sculpture in the South office, the Summerville Visitor Center and numerous stores in Summerville's Historic District.

"Flaunting It"
ALWAYS MAGESTIC
paintings by Yvonne Rousseau
featured show October 2015

Artist Yvonne L. Rousseau says she "has had the most fun", with her newest series of paintings entitled, "ALWAYS MAJESTIC," on display at Art Central during the month of October.  They are inspired by the prideful peacock, who flaunts, boasts, struts and squawks with a majestic, confident attitude.

Yvonne recalls that she knew a new series was in the making when "on a plein aire (on site) painting day, one special fellow caught my eye.  He took a short flight to a fence rail, looked in my direction as if to say 'are you ready to start my portrait,' and he held his pose comfortably until I was finished working and had packed my easel."  Yvonne's post painting relationship continued with this beautiful bird as he stayed around for her to shoot a great collection of photographs.

The artist continues, "Once my studio painting was started, I decided to develop backgrounds that were interesting but not competitive with my subject. The background of each painting is about subtle textures, colors and rhythms created with crumpled papers, palette knives, and brushstrokes. The backgrounds were as enjoyable to paint as the peacocks."

Each of the paintings describes a beautiful bird that is ALWAYS MAJESTIC but with a slightly different twist.  See Rousseau's work and meet the artist on Third Thursday, October 15th from 5-8pm .

Yvonne will be doing painting demonstrations at Art Central on the following days:
Third Thursday  October 15, 5:00-8:00
Friday               October 16, 10:00-5:00
Tuesday           October 27, 10:00-5:00
