Resource Smart Business Program: Work Smarter, Not Harder
Monthly Smart Tips
October, 2013
Who knew that the beginning of October would bring our first snow?! That means it's time to prepare your home for winter. This month's Resource Smart Business Program (RSBP) Smart Tips bring you ideas for long-term savings and overall well-being. These tips provide a spectrum of ways you and your office can get smart on a daily basis.

Energy Efficiency
Energy leaks in your home or business make your heater and A/C work harder to maintain a comfortable home. The harder your central heating and cooling systems have to work, the more money you have to spend. There are enough air leaks in the typical U.S. home to equal leaving a window wide open for 24 hours a day! Winterizing your home makes your place more energy efficient, so you can keep your family warm and toasty in the cold weather months without breaking the bank on energy bills. You can save up to 10% of total energy costs by air sealing your home or business and adding insulation.

Worksite Wellness
Do the winter months bring your spirits down? One of the best ways to combat the winter blues is exercise and activity. Our body requires movement to maximize the many bodily and biochemical processes involved in health and wellness. Be practical, choose activities you'll enjoy and that don't over-stress you. Typically it is recommended to be active enough to raise your heart rate at least 20-30 minutes three times per week.
On the flip side, over-training or elite level training is a 'stressor' on the body.  If you're an elite or high-level physical trainer, then it's critical to add quality dietary supplements and additional antioxidant support to assist your body in maintaining long term well-being.

Sustainability

Is your company or organization still purchasing virgin paper (paper with no recycled content) for the office?  Take a moment to work with your procurement staff to phase out the use of virgin paper and adopt a minimum standard of 30% post-consumer waste (PCW) recycled content for all office supplies. Ideally, all offices should be using 100% recycled paper. However, since 30% typically does not cost more than virgin paper, and 100% has a cost premium, take a baby step and start with the 30%. If you implement double-sided copying, typically you can save enough to offset the additional cost of 100% recycled paper. Choosing recycled paper has a multitude of environmental benefits, including a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and protection of biodiversity and native forests.
