Resource Smart Business Program: Work Smarter, Not Harder
Monthly Smart Tips

Spring must be in the air because with May comes the opening of the Durango Farmer's Market and National Bike Month! This month's tips are focused on smart ways to improve your work place's resource use and overall health. These tips provide a spectrum of ways you and your employees can get involved!

Energy Efficiency

When the days get longer, we need less light, but some of us use more air-conditioning. Place signs next to the light switch and thermostat reminding employees to be energy efficient and conserve as much as possible. Make it a habit to turn off the lights when you are leaving your work place for more than 15 minutes. Once you've turned on your air-conditioning, the most efficient temperature to set your thermostat at in summer is 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Worksite Wellness

With temperatures getting warmer, consider planting a garden at home or for your workplace. Gardening and weeding is a great way to de-stress and get some exercise with innumerable benefits from a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Container gardening is a great option for those that can't plant a traditional one. Learn more about home gardening and ways to start planning your garden

Overall Sustainability

Since fresh and local produce is coming back into season, it's time to start eating more local food. Purchasing local, sustainable food is one easy way to reduce one's carbon footprint. Consider starting a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program  at work and don't forget to visit the Durango Farmer's Market, which begins Saturday, May 11th.

Truth or Dare?

Don't forget to sign up for the RSBP Truth or Dare Challenge! The Truth or Dare Challenge is a fun and easy way for YOU to win a bike and other goodies while supporting the health of our community.

We invite La Plata County to take on a series of "Dares," or opportunities to reduce energy use, pollution and improve health. Each "Dare" is accompanied by the "Truth" of what happens if we fail to take action. Participants that earn the most points will be awarded prizes for their efforts. The contest is hosted on the RSBP website and Facebook page

Are you up to the challenge, or do we have to triple-dog dare you?
