Bicyle, walk, take the bus, hot air balloon, carpool, glider ride, catch the train, unicyle, or jump rope. All these could be an alternative method to getting yourself to school or work.
Read on to learn more how you can reduce your need to drive!

5 Ways to Decrease Your Need to Drive Which Way is Right For YOU?
- Live out of town? Carpool with a neighbor. Find ride share information here.
- Live in town? Try the Free Trolley, Transit Bus in Durango, or RoadRunner Transit if you are headed to Ignacio, Bayfield, Aztec or Durango.
- Turn your old bike into a grocery-getter. Attach an old milk crate to your bike, or go with panniers. Check out this how-to resource.
- Those boots (and flip-flops, flats, and loafers) were made for walkin'- plan a little extra time for your commute and, if it isn't too far, walk! Here is a map of Durango, Cortez, and Pagosa Springs to get you there.
- Got to get those kids to school or summer camp? Make a date with them at least one day a week to bike to school, and get them started early with healthy commuting habits. Find more kid-commute info here.

Don't Have a Ride?
Win a Cruiser Bike!
The Truth or Dare Challenge is a fun and easy way for YOU to win a bike and other goodies while supporting the health of our community.
The Resource Smart Business Program (RSBP) adapted the Truth or Dare contest used in Telluride and brought it home to La Plata County. We invite La Plata County to take on a series of "Dares," or opportunities to reduce energy use, pollution and improve health. Each "Dare" is accompanied by the "Truth" of what happens if we fail to take action. Participants that earn the most points will be awarded prizes for their efforts. The contest is hosted on the RSBP website.

My Big Fat Greek Commute
By Teresa Shishim, 4CORE Program Manager
Almost every morning my daughter and I prepare for our day... Most days she climbs into her bike trailer with her backpack and I load up my panniers with lap top, lunch bag, and yoga mat. This requires a Big bike with rather Fat pouches on the sides...
Another Big thing about our commute is the hill I ride towing my 32 lb daughter and all our gear. "I think I can, I think I can," runs through my head as the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge whistle echos over the town, my daughter "choo-chooing" from her trailer, and our vantage increasing as we climb up Cemetery Road hill...
I improve my health every time we ride, staving off weight gain (another Fat part of the commute). There are even employee tax incentives available to those who commute by bike.
Stay with me now, because here is the Greek part of this commute...

You HAVE to Drive?
Gas prices just went up. Again! You can decrease your need to guzzle gas with these tips to boost fuel economy:
- Drive sensibly: Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration and braking (it lowers your gas mileage by 5- 33%!)
- Remove excess weight: Carry only what you need.
- Keep tires inflated: Check the sticker inside your door to glove box for the proper pressure.
- Observe the speed limit: Fuel economy generally drops at speeds above 50 mph.
- Decrease your drag: Remove rooftop boxes and racks when not in use.
- Avoid idling: Turn off your engine when parked.
- Keep your engine tuned: Delaying maintenance can impact fuel efficiency.
- Combine trips: Several short trips use more fuel than one combined trip.

The Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado is a non-profit professional association of 100 member companies, all local businesses, whose diverse services include building homes, remodeling, architecture and design, real estate sales, banking and mortgage refinancing, insurance, subcontracting and material suppliers. We are affiliated with the Colorado Association of Home Builders which has more than 3,200 member companies and the National Association of Home Builders which has 216,000 member companies. All three organizations have extensive social, political and educational programs. Our members employ many of the people working in our community, several thousand here locally in La Plata County. These employees provide a significant contribution to the local community.
Southwest Solar Transformation Initiative (SSTI) represents a regional team of public and private partners committed to advancing solar power adoption across participating municipalities within the Southwest region. SSTI is targeting communities in the Southwest because the solar resource is abundant, but its enormous potential has been largely untapped. The focus of this program is to drive solar market maturity via significant improvements in five key areas: Permitting, Planning and Zoning, Interconnection, Net Metering and Financing.
