NEWSLETTER - August 2013 |
We're taking a break from our long list of summer home maintenance projects to prepare our shop and our website for our annual Tax Holiday Weekend Sale. This year the Massachusetts Tax Holiday falls on this weekend, August 10 and 11. As you scroll through this newsletter, you'll find details on the sale, which features 20% to 50% discounts on everything in the shop. Yes, everything. You'll also find an analysis of one of the most elaborate and beautiful chairs we've ever offered, as well as our regular features. We hope you'll have a look.

The Making of an Early Carved Chair
This month we take a look at one of our favorite pieces currently in inventory: this lavishly carved walnut side chair. While we're happy to have the single chair, evidence shows that it was originally one of a set of at least a dozen similar chairs. The task of manufacturing these chairs no doubt fell to a 17th century furniture shop, where work was done by a group of woodworkers. The scope and sophistication of this project got us thinking about the complex processes required to produce the set. Click on the picture to read more.

The Back Page
We've just finished redecorating another room in our house - this one the master bath. We've tried to capture the spirit of one of our very favorite genres of European painting. For a look, click here.
