Our First Newsletter of the New Year

The new year is off to a busy start. We continue to look at new technologies and ways to expand and improve the services we offer.

The feedback we've received from owners about how their pets are doing is extremely gratifying. We post these stories on the VNoC Facebook page where you can learn about Kermit, Martini, Charlie and Bean-just some of the pets we treated in January.

We also receive many compliments on the photography of our staff and their pets that's featured on our website and in these newsletters. They're taken by noted nature, wildlife and pet photographer, Lori Gross of Red Leash Photography. This month we're offering our referring veterinarians a chance to win a free photo session with Lori, just for filling out our survey on pet insurance.

With thanks for trusting and valuing our services,

Dr. Jay McDonnell, Dr. Jeff Clarke, Dr. Rebecca Krimins
and the staffs of VNoC & VIoC

BAERVNoC BAER Testing

At Veterinary Neurology of the Chesapeake, we offer BAER (brainstem-auditory-evoked-response) testing, the only 100% reliable method for determining that a dog is deaf.

Bilaterally deaf dogs - dogs that are deaf in both ears - are usually easy to identify as they do not respond to any noises, including very loud or startling sounds. Unilateral deaf dogs are notoriously difficult to identify because they compensate very well for the loss of hearing in one ear, but the BAER test can accurately detect unilaterally deafness. The test is painless and quick, and test results are available immediately. MORE>>

sonocureRevolutionary New Technology:
SonoCure, the "Tumor Tool"

VNoC is the first practice in North America to use a revolutionary surgical technology previously restricted to the human medical field. The SonoCure ultrasonic aspirator combines the soft tissue dissection and tumor disruption of a CUSA with the ability to remove bone over critical soft structures.

According to Dr. Jay McDonnell, "The SonoCure is an exciting tool to have in our surgical arsenal. It preferentially removes tumorous tissue and leaves healthy tissue behind, preserving the normal tissue."

acvimThe ACVIM Foundation Memorial Program
Each month, VNoC and VIoC donate to the ACVIM Foundation in memory of patients who have passed away. In this way, we honor the bond of between pets and their owners, who can take comfort in knowing that the donation can translate into longer, healthier lives for millions of animals everywhere. In just one generation, ACVIM specialists have improved and saved the lives of countless animals-from advancing nutrition and preventive care to developing more sensitive screening for diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, cardiomyopathy, and kidney failure. If you'd like to contribute, you can donate on the ACVIM Foundation website.

CaseWeekly Case Study:
Magnetic Resonance Angiography

By Kevin C. Stevens, ARRT, RT (R)(MR)
Standard angiography is a rather invasive procedure requiring arterial catheterization in some cases and the introduction of a radiopaque contrast material so that the arterial system can be viewed through a radiographic procedure. These are done either through interventional radiography or Computed Tomography. With MRA we are able to save the patient from the extreme amounts of radiation and normally perform the exam completely non-invasively.  MORE>>
