WOW -- So Many Oyster Castles
Now, watch the oyster spat move in!

May and June are the prime time to build oyster castles!  Our oysters spawn when the water gets warm and we want to have the new castles ready for them
Jack Korte Reef
by First Landing Boat Ramp in Broad Bay at
64th Street.

In the past month, we have moved 87,075 pounds of oyster castle blocks
to build 58 castles in
6 different locations
with the help of
132 great volunteers

A huge thank you to everyone who helped.  A year of planning goes into
each project.  This was a huge effort
and will provide much needed habitat for our growing oyster population.

Summer Scientist Program
Great Family Activity, Saturday, July 11

Brock Environmental Center, 10 AM - Noon

Do you dread the classic question in the fall..."What did you do on your summer vacation?"  Are you looking for an activity your family can do together out in nature?  Something fun and educational that will also help to save our river?

LRNow is partnering with the Virginia Aquarium for a new citizen science program to monitor the water

quality in the river by analyzing data taken by families from the water nearest their home.

The training workshop will be held July 11, at the Brock Environmental Center, from 10 AM to Noon.  Taking the samples is easy to do, and takes just a few minutes a week.  Exciting perks include trips to the Aquarium and even Behind the Scenes tours!

If you are interested in more information or would like to register, please contact Emily at or call 962-5398.  Spaces are limited and will go quickly.
